Latest News from Kent County Cricket Club 7th January 2003 Someone up at SKY headquarters must be feeling generous. . . At least three (yes three) home games will be shown next season. Games to be shown are: 23rd June - 20/20 match against the Surrey ladz 11th August - National League match against Worcester. 3rd September - National League match against Surrey. They'll also be showing the one day international between South Africa and Zimbabwe from the St. Lawrence. They're also showing Kent's national league away games against Essex on the 10th May and Gloucestershire on the 27th August. 7th December 2002 At last the England selectors have established who Martin Saggers is and put him in the provisional world-cup squad. The squad of thirty announced will be halved in a few weeks and this will be the finalised team for South Africa. General feeling is that he won't make the final squad but he sure deserves too especially after being ignored for the Ashes tour. Not entirely convinced about BBC Ceefax's veteran tag that they assigned to him in their report either. Hmmmmmmm. . . . . 27th November 2002 David Masters has left Kent CCC and joined Leicestershire. Are we going to have enough players left in the squad by April 2003 to be able to put 11 out on the field?? I think not. 17th November 2002 Rob Key has scored an unbeaten 174 against Australia 'A' and put himself right in contention for selection for the 2nd Ashes test. With John Crawley injured, and possibly out of the next test, is it time for the England selectors to pick a Kent man at last. . . . ??? Well I think they should anyway. 13th November 2002 Worcs' released player Alamgir Sheriyar (29) has signed a two-year contract for Kent. The left-arm, fast bowler took over 60 wickets in 2002. 26th October 2002 Kent CCC have announced their fixture list for 2003. It can be seen here. 26th October 2002 Kent have signed 22 year old Peter Trego - an all-rounder from Somerset for 2003. He signed a two year contract. 26th October 2002 Dave Fulton has been announced as the sole Kent captain for 2003. Last season he shared the captaincy with Matthew Fleming who has now retired from professional cricket. 26th October 2002 Saggy gets the England call up. . . . .for the Hong Kong Sixes tournament. The 7 man squad - managed by David Graveney - is Matt Maynard (capt), Glen Chapple, Paul Collingwood, Adam Hollioake, Ronnie Irani, Martin Saggers and Chris Silverwood. Saggy has also signed a long term contract for Kent. 2nd October 2002 Saggy scoops up the awards dinner!! Martin Saggers won four awards out of seven at the Kent CCC Gala Awards Dinner held at the St. Lawrence Ground. To find out more and who won what click here. 28th September 2002 Kent win something this season afterall!! Kent (captained by Mark Ealham) have defeated Essex (captained by Ronnie Irani - fresh back from England duty) in the Kleinwort Benson Cricket challenge. The game was held on the KGV Playing Fields, Guernsey. They now face Somerset next year to defend their title. Too find out more about the match click here. 28th September 2002 Rob Key gets the England call up!! England selectors are aware of Kent players afterall as Robert Key is called up for the Ashes tour in place of Graham Thorpe who has pulled out of playing. . . . again. Now if they only knew of Martin Saggers' existence. . . . 23rd September 2002 2003 playing staff announced. Following on from the departure of Paul Nixon, Kent have also announced that Matt Banes and Martin McCague will also be released. James Hockley and James Golding have been given permission to have talks with other counties about possible moves. 18th September 2002 Kent CCC have announced that the contract of Paul Nixon will not be renewed at the end of the season. The reason for this is sited as a wages dispute. In the wake of new regulations next year, that allow a county to have two overseas players, it is thought that Kent are offering Nixon a lower wage in order to bring in a big name player from abroad. Geraint Jones is now promoted to the first choice wicket keeper slot after having a run in the team towards the end of the 2002 season as a batsman. |
