Kent CCC Awards 2002 - Saggy's night! The annual Kent CCC awards were this year held on 2nd October in the pavilion marquee (fancy tent!) at the St. Lawrence Ground Canterbury. There were eight awards to be given out. Most Improved Player (Sponsored by Aurora Financial Services Ltd.) Winner - Amjad Khan A well deserved award for Amjad. Although he did find himself embarrassed when Martin Saggers claimed one of the secrets of his own success is Amjad - He gets a bigger rest between overs as Amjad tends to bowl eight-ball overs meaning he can come back more refreshed! Amjad Khan in no-ball shock?? Surely not. . . . The Kent Messenger Readers' Player of the Year Winner - Martin Saggers The first award for Saggy of the night. No real surprises with this one. Surely the best qualified English, county bowler not playing for England. Yet. . . . Votes also polled for Stumpy the Stilt Walker (1) and Jon Fordham (2).
Shepherd Neame Best Batsman Award Winner - Robert Key Kent's latest international is the popular choice for Kent batsman of the year. I think he was rather hoping that the trophy would be filled with Shepherd Neame beer as well.
Shepherd Neame Best Bowler Award Winner - Martin Saggers No surprises here as Saggy gets his second award of the night. Another won requiring loads of Shepherd Neame beer for his efforts me thinks.
Shepherd Neame Lifetime Achievement Award Winner - Matthew Fleming A long and emotional speech read by Jazzer in which he, in turn, thanked everyone that had helped with his career. It was unbelievable to hear the stats that were reeled of about Jazzer's career. Surely one of the most popular Kent captains with both team and supporters. Standing ovation well deserved.
The Denness Award for leading Run Scorer Winner - Robert Key Ed Smith fell just 69 runs short of winning this award (thanks to limited one day innings) but it was Rob Key that came up on top. When questioned on his latest call up he described the moment that he was told of his forthcoming tour to Oz. David Graveney phoned him up on the Friday night to tell him the good news. It was not clear who was the most shocked - Rob for his call up or David Graveney finding out that Rob was at home on a Friday night and not in some seedy wine bar.
The Underwood Award for Leading Wicket Taker Winner - Martin Saggers Ending up as one of the leading wicket takers in the country - again - and still no England call up. Jazzer was correct in saying that if both Saggers and Khan had been playing at Headingley then India wouldn't have rattled up 600+ runs - except for Amjad's extras of course.
The Cowdrey Award for Player of the Season Winner - Martin Saggers The last award of the night goes, very unsurprisingly, to Saggy! He's going to be spending the winter in South Africa improving upon perfection. He did however state he'd rather be in Oz rooming with Rob Key and being taken to the previously mentioned seedy wine bars. |
