Shetland Sheepdogs first came into our lives in 1983 when we bought our first Sheltie (Kas) who was a tricolour. Then I discovered the blue merle colour, which I'd never seen until going to look at him as a puppy, as his mother and two litter brothers were blue merle.  Gradually I came to love that colour and now I admit to being colour blind, preferring blue merles to any other.  But a Sheltie is still a Sheltie, regardless of colour!

As a breed, Shetland Sheepdogs are a wonderful little dog.  Shelties have quite a large size variation, with large and small still appearing.  The desired size range is between 14 inches and 15 inches, which makes them a good size for the house.  There are 3 main colours, sable, tricolour and blue merle, something for everyone!  They have a sweet, loving, loyal nature, but are also ready for action and to join in with any activities.  They often excel at obedience, and agility.  Being of a sensitive nature, positive training methods are much more likely to result in a happy worker.  Clicker training is ideal.

In the 'good old days' we had the pleasure of the company of six Shelties.  They were also the 'noisy old days'! But sadly, over the past few years our Sheltie family members have left us one by one and now we only have two amongst our 4-legged family.

Tessa 7 months old

Kwite a Kuty of Kensham

Born February 10th, 1986

This is Tessa who is 7 months old in this photo and is now the grand old age of 14 1/2 years.  While I wouldn't say she's still going strong, she is hanging in there for all it's worth.  She has been plagued with health problems for many years now.

Tessa on bank In her hey day she was a glamorous looking girl with lots of coat, and while she hated the show ring, she did manage to win one Puppy of Group and two Reserve Challenges despite herself!  She was even known to limp around the show ring and immediately lose that limp when coming out!!

Tessa 13 1/2 years old These days she is struggling with skin problems, bad arthritis, and ear infections, but she's still smiling and enjoying life and her rides in the car.  She is the toughest, bravest little dog I've ever come across and never loses her good humour.  I have so much admiration for her as a 'person'.  We know she can't live forever but we're trying to make every day a special one for her.
