Post
Headline:The return of a
one-hit wonder Subhead:Byline Elaine
Singleton talks to a man
In his adopted home of America he can draw crowds of
10,000 to his gigs
yet here at home in Lancashire he's still a one hit 80s wonder.
John Waite scored a massive hit in 1984 with Missing You and then, in
the UK at least, he disappeared back into obscurity. Meanwhile in the
States where he has lived for 20 years, he had a successful chart career, starred in a TV
soap opera with Morgan Fairchild, a lip-glossed,
shoulder-padded icon of the 80s, and has just completed a three month
tour of the US with Journey playing to audiences of 10,000 a night.
In Europe too his star still shines and it was on the way back from some
gigs in Holland that he called into his home city of Lancaster to see
family and friends. The flying visit to the UK brought some welcome career news too. His
new single Keys To Your Heart has just made the Radio 2 playlist and is getting airplay
three times day. With the likes of Wogan, Ken Bruce and Steve Wright plugging his
music,
John, 47, hopes that maybe, 17 years on, he can grab another UK chart
hit.
In the last couple of years he's been living in Santa
Monica, LA, but until he moved he was living in Manhattan, New York, just a block away
from the Twin Towers. Like people the world over John was hit hard by the tragedy, and
seeing the devastation and loss of life so close to his former home, in streets he knew so
well, was particularly difficult.
He was in America on September 11 at home in Santa Monica, when the
phone rang. "My manager called and told me to put on the TV. Like everyone I couldn't
believe what I was seeing. There are just no
words that can do justice to what happened. "The people there are still very stunned.
I think everybody is in a state of shock. It's just terrible."
Two decades in the States have done nothing to much alter John's
Lancastrian vowels. Now and again a trace of an American drawl creeps in
or perhaps an Americanism like mail for post or garbage for rubbish, but
other than that he's still a Lancashire Lad. In fact despite living across the Pond for so
long and having such success out there, Lancaster and Lancashire are still where he calls
home. "I've lived in America now for 18, 20 years, but when I'm home in Lancaster I
know it's where I'm from. My family's here and I still have friends here that I see when
I'm over," he said.
One of those friends is Lancaster's tourism officer David Wright, well
known around the city for his historical calendar walks, Georgian and
maritime festivals, garbed in appropriate historical clothing.
He and John were at Greaves Secondary School together and used to bunk
off games to go to the Waites' Barton Road home so they could listen to
Sergeant Pepper rather than freeze on the soccer pitch.
John's music career began when he played in a rock band with brother Joe
but it was at the tender age of 18 that he first tried his luck in the
States as lead singer of The Baby's. When they split up in the early
80s he came back home, wrote an album which bombed and then decided to
go back to America and go solo.
His Yankee success started there,
but apart from that brief 80s success with Missing You, he's never set
the UK on fire. However, with new single and new album, Figure In A Landscape, poised for
release, and with the support of newly trendy Radio 2, he hopes that at last he will crack
his home
market. And then the man who once made national newspaper headlines as Britt
Ekland's toy boy need Waite no more for UK stardom.
Hartelijk bedankt aan al mijn vrienden in Nederland.danke voor jullie

After the AOR legend Bad English
vanished, and 1991 after only two albums, it was very quit about their introvert
frontmann. His last two albums Temple Bar and When You Are Mine
Weren't released at all outside the USA.
Now this great singer try to come
back, with a new label, a new band and the first tour in ten year.
Lets not forget to mention his new
album FIGURE IN A LANDSCAPE.
An Englishman in New York
Even with his 46 years ,the redheaded
singer is still young and dynamic.
He's someone, who has been in rock
business for over 25 years and knows all highs and lows in it.
During the interview it is only British
friendliness.
A truly British gentleman ,with a
typical London cockney accent.
He does not gladly talk about his past,
but when I mentioned his last released album Figure in a Landscape he
brightens up.
"When you are young, you think you are on top
and make the best.but when you are in business for a few years you always learn more and
you can use this. The experience is the only thing that counts at the end.You have to
experience all things in life for yourself, go through this and then make it into your own
music."His seventh solo-album"F.I.A.L."is the honest work of
an artist who has worked up his painful memories, about his divorce and several
separations from his musiclabels,in a musical way. When you first hear the cd you will
stuck with the wonderfulNYC Girl, which he
wrote with STYX-bassist Glen Burtnik. This song has that something what did make Missing
You make a world hit twenty years ago.And would have been without doubt a top ten hit too
at that time. But this is not that what John is expecting."It would be nice ,when some
radio stations in and around New York would airplay some titles and push the album.I make
my music for me and my fans and not to make my music label get richer. If I would go to London and play
in"Marquee"with an audience of 500 people or in the "Wembley-arena
and play for 20.000,it doesn't matter to me anymore."The last for years where for the singer very
important, to get back to his roots. The separation with the Mercurylabel, who wanted to
much and had an to high expectation of the artist, who weren't any helpfully for his
artistic creations.But the
decision he took to concentrate on his musical carriere came withhelp of the live gigs heplayed. With help from the gigs and the fans I did found
my musical ME back. people ,practicaly forget about everything around it.Finally I could concentrate on my homework and play
some real good concerts for thousands of And not only to make reclame for a new
product, and now one who says to do this and that.So called a rebirth of John Waite. So he finally has learned to enjoy
his life as singer and songwriter.Im happier and elated as never before.Music plays everyday the
leading part of my life and I dont have to pay attention on any transistory
musicstyleDuring the interview I cant resist to ask John about his past with
Bad English and the Babys. There are rumours going about a Bad-English live cd.Did they
recorded any of the Bad English shows? No
more is the pitty, they never did Althought we just had two studio albums ,Id loved
to recorded a live cd with a few new songs on it,that would have crown the whole thing,at
the end.But already during the recording of the second albumBacklashwe
couldnt agree anymore for some stuff.I had one of the best bluess-rock
gitarplayers,Neal Schon,in the band and wanted to go more in the bluess direction.Jonathan
Caine and our musiclabel just wanted another Arena group like Journy. And I didnt
want this at all. When we did play Missing You in our set,it was the beginning of the end.No
I dont think there will be a Bad English-reunion.After the relaese of five
Babys albums by One Way(Emi-Capitol)earlier this year, they will release his first four
solo-albums from the eighties.There is
mentioning of a live cd too..This will going about shows in
the year 1982 and 1984.About 12 songs from 1982 with the Ignition musicians and 2 songs
from the No Brakes concerts,Tears and Missing You with Earl Stick at the gitar.Ther
are always talking about a unrelaesed stuff from the John Waite archives whats about
this? I can tell some about this issue. The cd-label MTM wanted to release some
material in Europe and was interested at a deal. With that I made a beautiful compilation
with solo material from 1981 till 1996.But when they looked at the produkt they were
gone, because that wasnt it what they wanted. They were expecting a classical
Mainstream-produkt in the 80 style. There was even a song with some country music
elements, think they were shocked.Anyhow Im gladthis talented musician is trying to come with a
seroius ComeBack and want to make more tours again. His new band is the reall finest
one, with for example Damon Johnson from Brother Cane as gitarplayer, who nows to play the
calm songs with a part of heaviness. And give those the right kick. The songs are a compilation from Solo-Bad English
and The Babys hits ,with even three new songs from his newest album.

John Waite -
Figure In A Landscape
Review By : JWWC Staff Member Crissy
John's new CD, Figure In A
Landscape" (release date, August 21, on Gold Circle Records), will demonstrate yet
again that he is a unique singer-songwriter. The distinct vocal style he is known for
shines through every track.
The CD's opener, "Keys To Your Heart," which will be the first single released
from the album, is an upbeat song in the "Americana" vein. It's already garnered
a very favorable review in Billboard Magazine's singles column.
"Fly," which is expected to be the second single, is about the need to let go of
certain emotions and the determination to carry on with life once you've done so. It was
written and originally recorded by a band named Radford.
"Their A&R man played me that song," John recounts, "and I'm thinking,
man, that's a beauty. It sounds like The Babys would sound. I made a mental note of it,
and when we came around to cutting tracks, I rang the singer up and said, would he mind if
we cut his song? It's like being Frank Sinatra at some point. He once said that singing
songs is like pulling out fine bottles of wine. When you are a singer-songwriter, it's
nice to have a bottle of somebody else's wine occasionally."**
Two tracks that stand out from the CD are "New Thing," for its Spanish-sounding
acoustic guitars, and "My Special One," for its Ry-Cooder-like slidework. Not
the styles we're used to hearing from John.
There's also a faithful rendition of Vince Gill's "Whenever You Come Around."
Says John: "I went to see Vince Gill play at the Garden in New York City about five
years ago and he played it. I made a mental note that it was a very beautiful song. I'm a
big fan of country artists, and that's a stellar artist and a beautiful song. I just
wanted to put my spin on it."** On "Godhead," the disc reaches another
level. Although the dictionary definition of the word "Godhead" speaks of
divinity, John's application is a little more abstract. Here, he sings of sexuality in its
most majestic form, and the song's psychedelic instrumentation seems to echo his
sentiment.
The foundation to a good album is impeccable song writing and "Figure In A
Landscape" comes close. You will definitely be moved. John has drawn from many of his
diverse musical influences and proves that he has matured and come to fruition as an
artist. He submits these songs from his soul. This effort should put John Waite back on
the charts!
John has spent the summer of 2001 on a large-scale tour throughout the U.S. He's been
putting in an energetic set each night and the response has been overwhelming. "This
is the best I have ever felt," he says, "and I'm having such a great time on
tour. It's great to be back out there, seeing all those familiar faces."
John will embark on a solo tour this fall, and you can get all the details about it at
johnwaite.com. He'll be playing many of his classics, plus several numbers from
"Figure In A Landscape," like "NYC Girl," "Thinkin' Bout
You," and the afore-mentioned "Keys To Your Heart" and "Fly."
