John Gerrath's
GRAHAM Family

This is a large family that arrived from Argyllshire, Scotland in the mid-1840's and is connected to many families in Perth Co., Ontario. John Graham and Margaret Campbell and their children lived on a farm called Balmar/Balnar in the Kilberry area of Argyll in Scotland and eventually settled in Hibbert Twp., Perth Co., Ontario. It is said that the family spoke mostly Gaelic and were not very comfortable with the English language. Of John and Margaret's children, Janet married John Stevenson and Sarah married William Highlands/Hylands, a tailor in St.Mary's, Ontario. I'm currently trying to track where these lines have gone. Duncan married Mary Muir of Hibbert Twp. and moved to Avonbank in Downie Twp, Perth Co., Ontario. John Jr. (my G-G-Grandfather, b.in Kilberry, SCT) married Mary Patrick of Hibbert Twp. and had 7 children. Their daughter Margaret married John Fell (the next-door neighbour's son). Descendants of Margaret and John Fell still own John Graham's original farm north of Staffa (Hibbert Twp.) and have crafted a profitable seed business on the land. John and Mary's daughter Elizabeth married into the Muir family of Avonbank and eventually took in William Drewry, who married Mary (the youngest child of John Graham and Mary Patrick). The Grahams moved to Logan Twp. in Perth county during the late 1800's and, while many of the Graham line stayed in Ontario (and in Perth Co.!), there was an exodus to the greener (and damper) pastures of British Columbia at the turn of the 20th Century. Andrew Graham first set up a shop on the Fraser river at Whonnock and was soon followed by his brothers Alexander and Duncan, sister Mary and William Drewry and their mother Mary Patrick. They all remained in B.C. where most of their descendants live today.
