Bevolkerungslisten! My father and I stumbled upon these records in the catalogue of the Latter Day Saints about a year ago, and they are still providing a lot of great information and context for our German ancestral families in and around Koln. Essentially a census, the Bevolkerungslisten seems to have been a biennial event undertaken from 1799 to about 1812 in many Prussian regions west of the Rhine (especially around Köln and Duesseldorf) by the occupying government of Napoleanic France. The quality of information varies from parish to parish. Some census takers went far beyond the call of their orders while others were maddeningly vague. In general, you can expect to find the full names and ages of everyone above the age of 12, including the maiden names of most women (except for widows or "veuves"), and occasionally the same information for young children. Ages given are to be accepted with caution and should be compared with and corroborated by parish and civil registration records of the same era. Birthplaces are not really listed, but there is a column showing when each occupant arrived in each town, so if they arrived in town the same year of their birth, chances are they were born in that town! Below you'll find listings of towns in the manner they are grouped by the census. The bold-underlined names are sort of equivalent to townships and seem to carry over into the German Civil Registration rolls (1798-1875). Check back occasionally as this is an ongoing project; new towns could come online at any time! I hope you find something of use in these records, and I welcome any questions about or additions to these pages!
