Learning Beliefs

"Libraries must be designed to promote and sustain the development of the learning communites," begins Jamieson (2005). The article discusses how the learning environment of a library must meet the needs of today's patrons. The library is transfroming to accomodate a higher learning center. A library is to be now  more "student-centered, flexible, collaborative, and problem-based" (Jamieson 2005).

Jamieson (2005) states that libraries should be a place where the learning process is more forceful. Future libraries will have a wide range in meeting needs of patrons, such as quiet zones for concentration, interactive areas were students can collaborate and use the newest technology, access to online services and live experts, and a zone for "community building" (Jamieson 2005).

The article concluded with the example of Monash University library, in Australia, which created a physical environment that sustained a student-centered, problem-based learning center. Computers that allowed for individual or group access, quiet zones for concentrating, group areas for collaboration, and access to coffee-shop type seating that allowed snack foods and drinks, were some physical changes made toward a better learning center. Due to the user comforts, group accomodation, and refreshments, the new library received an overwhelming response of new patrons (Jamieson 2005). The Monash Univerisity planned and designed its facility to create a better learning environment and expereince.

The article showed that planning and designing a learning environement, classroom or library, can create a better educational experience. However, stronger examples could have been given.
