Friday was a continuation of the more relaxing part of the trip, and it was great. We started the day by going to Stanmer Village, a little town just on the other side of the hill from the University of Sussex. We went to a little tea house for breakfast, and it was so England. We met some of the locals, and had a great morning. Then we went into Brighton and walked along the pier. The city reminds me of a combination of Santa Monica Pier and the Tel Aviv tayelet. It really was great. After a great British Ale, we went back to the school and then found a synagogue for services. The rabbi was both French and Israeli, and although the service wasn't exactly what I prefer, the rabbi was extremely nice and it was a great chance to see British Reform Jewry.
Now comes the best story of the trip, and I don't even know if I can describe it, but I will try. We went to a pub, and I ordered a beer. While taking my change, I apparently knocked a bottle of someone else's beer off of the bar. It must have landed directly on the bottom of the bottle, causing a change of pressure in the bottle, meaning all of the sudden a stream of beer was shooting up from the floor into my face. It was one of the strangest things I've ever not seen, but as the bartender said, "It was like fireworks!". |
