| Rumors persist that JF will star with Van Johnson in a movie musical based on DIE FLADERMAUS. The Warner Bros.' film was never put into production. | |
| February 8 | JF withdraws from the play TEA AND SYMPATHY due to a bout with bursitis. |

| March | JF returns to RKO for a three-picture deal, SERENADE released (March 13). |

| January | JF and Mrs. Fontaine fly to France to meet Olivia's new husband and baby daughter. While in France JF visits the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. |
| March | Dozier charges JF with being in contempt of court for disobeying custody orders handed down in March 1953. |
| May | JF agrees to compromise custody arrangement with Dozier. |
| June 13 | ISLAND IN THE SUN released. |
| mid-June | JF sails with her daughters on the Queen Mary to Cherbourg, France. |
| July 1 | Newsweek reports uproar in Minnesota, South Carolina, and Georgia over showing the controversial film ISLAND IN THE SUN. |
