| June 21 | JF goes on for Mexican actress Margo in the Max Reinhardt production FAUST. Reinhardt is very impressed with his understudy's performance. |
| June 22 | JF begins begins shooting in the film GUNGA DIN. |

| Summer | Conrad Nagel proposes marriage to JF. |

| Early | George Cukor offers JF the part of Melanie in GONE WITH THE WIND. JF finally refuses and suggests Olivia for the role. |

| Spring | Nagel and JF end their relationship. |

| Spring | JF signs a one-picture deal with MGM. She plays a young, likable bride in THE WOMEN. |
| Late June | JF meets Brian Aherne at a party given at his home on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. |
| August 19 | JF marries actor Brian Aherne. |
| Late August | JF signs a seven-year contract with David O. Selznick for $1200 a week. She would later regret signing the contract. |
| September 22 | THE WOMEN released. |
| 1940 | |
| Selznick announces that JF will make her Broadway debut in a revival of THE BEAUX STRATEGEM. Aherne is scheduled to be her co-star. The project was cancelled. Rumors circulate that JF will co-star with Aherne in Chester Erskin's play CURTAIN GOING UP. The rumors never panned out. |

| November 8 | Mr. de Havilland threatens Warner Bros. that he will go to the press with his story of his daughters' neglect. |
| November 22 | William R. Wilkerson of THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER intentionally buries Mr. de Havilland's letter in a file. |
| December | JF enters Good Samaritan Hospital with lowered resistance and fatigue. Olivia is operated on for appendicitis at the same hospital. |
