Mrs. de Havilland, Joan, and Olivia move into the Lundblad Boardinghouse in Saratoga, California.

Joan Scores 160 on an IQ test.

Joan enters St. Francis Hospital in San Fransisco with German measles and strep throat.

Mrs. de Havilland moves her daughters into the Vendome Hotel in San Jose.

February Lilian de Havilland receives a divorce from Walter de Havilland.

October 22 Joan celebrates her eighteenth birthday at the Musso-Frank Restaurant on Hollywood Blvd. with Mrs. Fontaine and Olivia.
1936
mid-June Joan begins a two-week run in the play CALL IT A DAY at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood.
Summer Joan changes her name to Joan St. John which she soon changes to Joan Fontaine.
Fall Jesse L. Lasky signs JF to a seven-year contract after seeing her in the play CALL IT A DAY.
1937
April 9 QUALITY STREET and THE MAN WHO FOUND HIMSELF released.
May 17 Mr. de Havilland sends a manuscript, entitled A HUNDRED YEARS APART, to the manager at RKO studios. He threatens to use his incestuous story to hurt JF's career if she continues to ignore him.
June 19 Mr. de Havilland submits the same manuscript to Robert Sparks, a production chief at RKO.
June 25 YOU CAN'T BEAT LOVE released.
Summer Lasky considers JF for the musical RADIO CITY REVELS (1937). Ann Miller is given the musical, because she is more suited for the role.

JF, Olivia, and Mrs. Fontaine move into a home on Nella Vista.
September 9 MUSIC FOR MADAME released.
November 24 A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS released.
