Constitution
ARTICLE I - NAME
The name of this organization shall be the
UNITED NATIONS STUDENT ASSOCIATION OF JOHN JAY COLLEGE, City University of New
York, herein referred to as UNSA.
ARTICLE II -
AFFILIATION
This club shall be hereby affiliated with
John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, and is
subject to the constitution and rules of that institution insofar as they affect
and prescribe the functions of student organizations.
ARTICLE III -
PURPOSE
The purpose of this club shall be to create a
forum in which students can familiarize themselves in all aspects concerning the
sphere of the United Nations.
ARTICLE IV -
MEMBERSHIP
Membership in this Club shall be open to any
student of John Jay College of Criminal Justice enrolled in either the graduate
or undergraduate level as well as alumnus of this
institution.
Section 1. All members must be currently
registered students of John Jay College of Criminal
Justice.
Section 2.
No person shall be denied membership or office because of national
origin, race, sex, physical disability, political or religious beliefs, or
sexual preference
Section 3. Any person desiring membership shall
register with the secretary at any time prior to or at a general membership
meeting.
Section 4. A student must attend at least fifty
percent (50%) of all general membership meetings held throughout a given
academic year.
Section 5. Alumni members of this club will be
honorary members with all rights and privileges of the general membership with
the exception of the fight to vote.
Section 6. Any person may withdraw from the
organization by notifying the secretary.
ARTICLE V -
GOVERNMENT
Section 1. The officers shall be a President, a
Vice President, a Treasurer, and a Secretary.
a. President - Responsible for
implementing and carrying out all decisions and policies of the club. He or she
presides over thc general meetings. The President will oversee all records and
fiscal matters and is empowered to sign check requests in the absence of the
Treasurer.
b.
Vice President - Assists the President in performing his or her duties,
and acts as president when the latter is not available.
c.
Treasurer - Maintains financial records and perfforms related duties,
such as signing check requests, and preparing budgets.
d.
Secretary - Keeps minutes of meetings and carriees out necessary
correspondence and related duties as assigned, such as keeping an active roster
of members.
Section 2. The President, Vice President,
Treasurer, and Secretary constitute the Executive Committee of the club. The
executive committee shall be answerable to the general membership of the
Club.
a.
The faculty advisor will he appointed by the executive committee subject
to approval by a quorum of all the active voting members of the
club.
b.
The president shall be the chairperson and presiding officer of the
executive committee. In the event the president cannot continue as a member of
the executive committee, the vice president shall assume the
office.
ELECTION
PROCEDURES
Section 1. All officers must be elected by
majority vote during the Spring semester. elections must be held no later than
the second week in May.
Section 2. Nominations shall be accepted from
the floor at the meeting prior to the elections.
Section 3. Elections shall be by the majority
vote of the active members present, whose names appear on the
membership.
Section 4. Contested elections must be referred
to the Judicial Board.
TERM OF
OFFICE
All officers of this organization shall serve
one academic year and may be elected for one additional year
to the same office.
ELIGIBILITY
All candidates shall have been a member of
this organization for at least one academic term prior to the semester in which
they would assume office. Undergraduate candidates must have a cumulative grade
point average of at least 2.5 at the time of their election. Graduate candidates
must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 at the time of their
election.
IMPEACHMENT OF
MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
Section 1.
Impeachment proceedings may be
brought against a member of the executive committee for negligence in carrying
out the duties of his her office, serious misconduct, and misappropriation of
funds.
Section 2.
Proceedings for impeachment may be
instituted by three-quarters (3/4) of the executive committee or a petition
signed by two-thirds (2/3) of active members.
Section 3.
A petition for the impeachment must
be in writing, stating the reason(s) for impeachment and must be signed by
two-thirds (2/3) of the active members of the club. It must be forwarded to the
Judicial Board, which shall notify in writing the person or persons being
brought up on charges and the date the hearing will be held. Signatures on the
petition will be validated by the Office of the Dean for Admissions and
Registration or his designee.
Section 4. The Judicial Board will convene a
hearing. The procedures for Impeachment and removal from the office of a club
executive shall be carried out as established in Article IV, Section 1 through 4
of the Charter of the Student Government.
MEETINGS
Section 1. There will be a meeting every
month.
Section 2. Special meetings of the organization
may be held at anytime upon the call of the Executive Committee or upon demand
in writing, stating the object of the proposed meeting by not less that twenty
percent (20%) of the active members.
Section 3. A quorum will consist of half the
active members plus one.
Section 4. The Executive Committee will meet
whenever it is deemed necessary by a majority of three (3) of its
members.
Section 5. All meetings shall be conducted
according to Robert�s Rules of Order (latest Edition) except where expressly
provided for in this constitution.
AMENDMENTS
Section l. Amendments to this constitution may
be introduced from the floor and must be submitted to the secretary in writing
at a general membership meeting.
Section 2. The entire active voting membership
shall be notified in writing at least five (5) school days prior to the meeting
at which the amendment is to be considered.
Section 3. A two-thirds (2/3) vote of the
active voting membership is necessary for the passage of an
amendment.
ARTICLE VI- FACULTY
ADVISOR
The Faculty Advisor shall be a member of the
faculty of John Jay College of Criminal Justice and shall be elected by the
members of this organization. He or she shall preside over the elections of this
Club.
ARTICLE VII-
RATIFICATION
This constitution shall be ratified and will
go into effect following the approval of the Student Council of John Jay College
of Criminal Justice, City University of New York.
