Willkommen Experten.
We follow the system of organization and structure of the Luftwaffe.
The Luftwaffe was a highly regimented, premium air force. Jagdgeschwader 26 will mimic this organization to the letter. This is not an attempt to strangle the creative effort of our Experten, rather to create an environment which is both appropriate to the period and the stresses of a regimented, military chain-of-command style squadron.
The squadron is led by two separate commands, each cooperative but fully independent of the other. The two command branch system splits the duties of the CO between two individuals thus halving the operational stresses of command and making it less likely that a CO will burn out.
The first command is the Reichsluftfahrtministerium, which leads from the Reichschancellery in Berlin. All political or public relations and administrative work falls under the jurisdiction of the RLM. The RLM is led by a Reichsmarschall and is an independent post. The only unit(s) that fall under the jurisdiction of the RLM is the Chef der Luftwehr and the Abteilungen Triumvirate. The RLM is not a combat unit and has no influence over wartime or military matters. Duties that fall to the RLM include, but are not limited to;
Web Site Design and Updating
Administrative Work/Records
Manuals and Other Errata
The second command is perhaps it's most vital. The military control of Luftflotten Two and it's subordinate, Geschwader 26, falls under the jurisdiction of the Chef der Oberkommando der Luftwaffe, or the OKL.
Larger theatre command such as the Luftgaue, play no significant role in AW, and as such, are not used. The OKL determines military tactics, strategy and assignments within the units. He approves aircraft camouflage schemes, down to the lettering. Any fine detail of military planning falls to the OKL. Duties that fall to the OKL include, but are not limited to;
Pilot Assignments
Tactical/Strategic Planning
Organization of Military Units
Redundant commands follow these two closely and assist in aiding the aims of the Geschwader.
The Chef der Luftwehr, vital to the promotion of individuals fit to lead, and the associated Abteilungen Triumvirate, are also integral parts of this command.
The training apparatus of the Geschwader, Entgegensetzendkrafte, or OpFor, (Opposing Force) is led by the Erganzungsgruppenkommandeur. To this directorate falls the responsibility of training and indoctrinating the Flugzeugefuhrer of the Geschwader. It also becomes his imperative to maintain a high level of readiness within the combat aircrews of Jagdgeschwader 26.
While the Erganzungsgruppe represents the training Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 26, the Einsatzgruppe reprsents our fully trained, air combat ready fighting force. It is led by the Einsatzgruppenkommandeur and is subordinate to the Chef der Oberkommando der Luftwaffe.
The existence of these commands further spreads the burden of the administrative and online work of operating a squadron between our members and creates an environment of synergy and cooperation in which we all contribute vitally to the success or failure of the Geschwader.
The overt command of Jagdgeschwader 26, and indeed, the historical counterpart fell to a high command. That high command in JG26 is comprised of the Chiefs of Staff. These Chiefs of Staff form the Supreme High Command. The Chiefs are Kommandeurs of different Abteilungen, or directorates, within the Geschwader. The following Chiefs sit on the General Staff of the Supreme High Command.
Chef der Reichsluftfahrtministerium, Kommandeur, RLM
Chef der Oberkommando der Luftwaffe, Kommandeur, OKL
Chef der Stabsschelfarhbalhaber - Kommandeur, Jabofleigerkorps (Bombers) OKL
Chef der Luftwehr - Kommandeur, Abteilungen der Personnel, RLM
Chef der Entgegensetzendkrafte - Kommandeur, OpFor, OKL
Unit Structure in Jagdgeschwader 26
The most basic unit is the Jagd, or Flugzeugefuhrer. Also called Experten, this refers to the individual pilot, which is the cornerstone of the Geschwader.
Two Experten form a Rotte, or pair. In this situation, the lead pilot is known as the Rottenfüührer and the wingman as the Katchmarek. This is the most common formation in Geschwader 26, as we employ highly effective wingman tactics.
Three Experten form a Kette, which often fly in Line Abreast or Line Astern formations. The Kette is the building block of the Staffel, which is comprised of three Kette, or nine Flugzeugefuhrer. Each Kette is led by a Stab flight of three aircraft.
Where two Rotte form, they instead create a Schwarm, or four aircraft. In this scenario, three Schwarm form a Staffel comprised of twelve aircraft. Each Schwarm is lead by a Stabsschwarm flight.
The flight IIa Offitzier is known as the Staffelfuhrer and is second in command in the Staffel. The IIa Offitzier is also commonly the second most senior officer in the flight and is also known as the Stabsschwarmstaffelfuhrer.
The Staffel is led by a Staffelkapitan, commonly a Oberleutnant or Hauptmann. It was extremely common in the wartime Luftwaffe to vary the strength, size and content of a Geschwader, Gruppen and even Staffel. This was often due to combat losses, re-assignments within the Geschwader, or to confuse enemy intelligence gathering apparatus.
For example, while JG26 was assigned to northern France in 1943, Staffel 7/JG26 was in the East, serving under JG54 on the Russian Front and elements of Staffel 9/JG26 were in Northern Italy. Later in the war, JG54 was disbanded and it's remaining aircraft and personnel were absorbed by JG26.
Three Staffeln form a Gruppe, which is comprised of 27 aircraft, if a Kette formation, or 36 aircraft if formed from a Schwarm formation. Three Gruppen form a Geschwader, whose strength always varied wildly throughout the war. The Gruppe was always led by a Gruppenkommandeur, usually an Oberstleutnant or higher.
The Geschwader itself was led by a Geschwaderkommodore, or Kommandeur, and often his own authority superceded that of local airfield commands. For example, if a Geschwaderkommodore were to operate out of an airfield, regardless of his rank, he often took over operational command of the airbase while he was stationed there. He often held the rank of Oberst or higher.
Several Geschwader would serve in a Luftflotte, which was a broader area command and several Luftflotten in turn, were assigned to a Luftgaue, or theatre command. Our particular Luftflotte was Luftflotte 2.
For AW purposes, this will serve little significance.
In Jagdgeschwader 26, we will base our basic unit formations upon the Kette formation. So, three Jagd will form a Kette, (3 a/c) three Kette will form a Staffel, (9 a/c) three Staffel will form a Gruppe, (27 a/c) and three Gruppe will form the Geschwader.
However, the AW environment only allows 40 members to a squadron, so this would literally require two separate squadrons at full Geschwader strength, an optimistic figure of 81 members. We sincerely do not see the Geschwader ever reaching such numbers, however we will be using the aforementioned formations none the less.
There will only ever be two Gruppe, the Erganzungsgruppe and the Einsatzgruppe. At maximum strength, the Geschwader would hold a total of nine Staffeln, which was in truth, the historic strength of JG26 in wartime.
More about organization to come.
