THE SANCTUARY OF
JESUS OF NAZARETH
SLIEMA,  MALTA

The first years of the twentieth century witnessed the coming of the Dominican Fathers to Sliema.  The event is rooted in the presence of the Sanctuary of Jesus of Nazareth which was founded sixteen years before the Dominicans were entrusted with its care.  These web pages give a historical background while recounting the facts that led to the development of the church as we know it today.

The manuscripts, documents and sources quoted are preserved in the Archives of our Priory here at Sliema.

The Minutes of the Conventual Council of the years 1939 to 1946 were also made use of.

Other manuscripts would have been priceless especially those relating to the years from 1925 to 1938.  Yet none could be found.  Most probably, the Second World War was the cause of the loss of writings and records of the community meetings which would have been valuable to the history and life of our church.

May the love and devotion to Jesus of Nazareth be the source of strength in fulfilling the Dominicans’ mission among the faithful.
