THE
ASMAT TRIBE
- Agats is the capital of Asmat region located in the south coast of
Irian Jaya which is swampy
area. The main transportation of the locals are padding canoe. To reach
one and others villages should be through the rivers by using motorized canoe
or paddling canoe. All visitors are required to bring the good equipment such
good shoes for muddy, medicine to against the mosquito' s and Malaria, hat and
sun protection, sleeping bag and air mattress as well as raincoat

KOROWAY TRIBE
- Koroway village is home for the Kombay Tribes people who live on the
Trees and of course un touristy. To reach the area
should be by charter Missionary Flight from Wamena or Jayapura with 2
hours flying time. An alternative is by flight landing in Timika and take long
boat trip through the open sea
“ARAFURU” to Asmat and drive up along the Siretz to Braza River which it
took at least couple week to be
there.

THE
PEOPLE & THE ART
Those
tribes inhabiting the coastal area and minor islands, such as Asmat, Sentani and
Biak
Island, Besides carving, Sentani Tribesmen do also painting usually they paint
on barks. The most
popular
carving is probably belonging to Asmat Tribes. Asmat art is ranked by scholars
and collectors among the world` s best traditional carvings. These wooden
sculptures have powerful lines
and bold schematic motifs that appeal strongly to the contemporary eye.
Every
Asmat man can carve and create various useful items out of wood, such as canoe
paddles,
bow
and similar utensils. But when a special object is needed, such as a shield, the
Asmat approach the
"wowipitsy" the master woodcarvers. The styles of carving are
varied depend on the
area
and the tribe who carve the wood. There are four main style regions of Asmat
Arts, Northwest
Asmat , Central Asmat, Brazza and Citak Mitak all represent typical carvings.
THE
PEOPLE AND WAY OF LIFE
The
indigenous people of Papua are Melanesians with black skin and curly hair.
The generally have
a
root crop subsistence agriculture based on sweet potatoes and taro. People
in the lowland and
swamps, however obtain their starch from the sago, palm which gives an
extremely generous yield for remarkably little effort. Feral and
domesticated pigs on the island of Papua from southeast Asia. An
event which has had vast cultural and ritual significance for its people
pigs are of the family and are sometimes suckled by women. In the some
places they also accompany women to the gardens daily when they are
weaned. From the discovery of a jawbone archeologists estimates the pig
arrives about 6,500 years ago. While
many other people of the world were still hunter and gatherers, Papua
people had begun to garden.
After fairly recently, of the people lived within a simple stone age
culture wearing little clothing and decorating their bodies with painting,
shells, pig tusks, feathers and skins. There is a plethora of languages in
the province, perhaps some 250 in all, each representing a tribal group
which mixed
little with the others. Some of the more remotes group still have
virtually no contact with the outside world. In recent years, Indonesian
from elsewhere in the country such Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi have
come to the province.
THE
FLORA AND FAUNA West Papua may have the richest wildlife and
concentration of plant life in all of Indonesia, or perhaps
the world. No other island in the archipelago can match its various kind
of birds,
including birds of paradise, Parrot families, pigeons and
flightless cassowary. Papua is also home of 150 species of lizards, 30,000
beetles, 200 frogs and 800 spiders. A high percentage of Papua` s 100
snake species are poisonous, including all 17 species of see-snakes. One
of the most beautiful reptiles is the green tree python, a harmless
creature with jewel like markings.
