Joining DiPSites WebRing

In layman's terms....it's like forming a chain over the internet

I was also not very clear about this WebRing thing till yesterday & Rachna was just as confused about this, so I thought I'd put a portion of the email that I sent her. Maybe it'll clear up as to what exactly this is.

If you had a web-site & say 10 other people had a web-site as well (it could be one of the free ones like Yahoo Geocities). So, what web ring does is, it puts a rectangular bar at the bottom of the main site page of all those who sign up. This bar has 2 main links, called "Previous" & "Next." And it's kind of the same idea as the "Forward" & "Back" buttons on your web browser like Netscape or IE.

Now, if you're at the site of person A & from their site if you click on the "Previous" or "Next" links OF THAT WEBRING BOX at the bottom of the page, then it randomly takes you to another person's site in that particular ring i.e. DiPSites ring, in this case.

So, idea is basically that sites of former DPS students would connect to each other, if everyone had that WebRing box at the bottom of their page.

Here is my page: http://www.geocities.com/jasleen_m/

At the bottom you see the WebRing box & the 2 links that I was talking about. As the ring grows, the 2 links could take to sites of other people, so it's kind of like forming a chain over the internet.

If you know more people then feel free to pass any relevant info that you feel like.

Why do this?

I think it's a great idea that our web-sites be linked together on the web! It will be nice to see sites of those share similar backgrounds i.e. being a D.P.S. student. Plus, it's free! So, why not?

How to do this?

1) Get a Web Ring ID from:
        http://new.webring.com/cgi-bin/signup?start

2) Join the DiPSites web-ring by clicking here:
        http://F.webring.com/wrman?ring=dipsites&addsite

3) Remember to copy & paste the code given in the directions.
You can also get the code in the following way:
        - After signing in, click on "My Rings"
        - Click on the corresponding title that you gave to your site
        - From the left panel, click on "Get Navigation code"
        - Copy the code they give from  the text box & Paste it anywhere on your page
        - The code is using javascript  to add the respective HTML code to your page whenever the page is loaded
        - It can be copied anywhere in the HTML code of your page

4) In the meantime, I will get the request & I can authorize an addition to the ring.

5) After authorization, your page will show a WebRing bar at the bottom of your page that links to other pages
