William the Conqueror was the illegitimate son of Robert II and Arlette. His claim to the English throne rested on a promise to him by Edward the Confessor (who later changed his mind) and a sworn oath - either of allegiance or assistance - by Harold himself, who had been captured when the wind blew his ship on the French coast. There followed what was to be the most famous battle in English history, at Hastings. Having earned his title as The Conqueror for his invasion of England, William established a firm government marked by such undertakings as the Domesday survey in 1086, a grand record of all land tenure throughout the country. He also built the White Tower, the central portion of what is now the Tower of London. Although Saxon unrest persisted throughout much of his reign, he eventually won over the last of the English leaders, Hereward the Wake. William I reigned from 1066 to 1087.. William was born at Falaise, Normandy, France, circa 1027. He was the son of Robert I () and Herleve (). Alfred the Great became the most famous and illustrious of all the early English kings. He was crowned king at Winchester in 871 and ruled from 871 to 899. Wessex was then the only English kingdom holding out against the Danes, who had invaded on a massive scale in 865. After another great invasion in 878, Alfred retired to `Egbert's Stone' to build up his army. He subsequently defeated the Danes (whose king Guthrum was then duly baptized), reorganized the Wessex defenses and built ships to contain the Danish menace. He overcame his early illiteracy and ignorance to become a great soldier, statesman and scholar. Alfred founded the British Navy, organized the militia, compiled a code of laws, built schools and monasteries and invited scholars to live at his court. He translated many works of philosophy, religion and history. He married Ealswith () at England. Alfred was born at Wantage, Berkshire, England, circa 849. He was the son of Aethelwulf () and (?) Osburh. Alfred died on 28 October 901 at England.
