CHARLEMAGNE, in Latin Carolus Magnus (Charles the Great), was King of the Franks from 768 to 814 and Emperor of the West (Romans) from 800 to 814. He was crowned Emperor, at Rome by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day 800. The cloak that he wore is on display at the Vatican Museum. Charlemagne became a key figure in the development of Western Europe's medieval civilization. By his almost constant military campaigns, Charlemagne created a vast empire in the West which included much of the western part of the old Roman Empire as well as some new territory. He was the first Germanic ruler to assume the title of emporer, and the "empire" he revived lasted in one form or another for a thousand years. Probably no ruler of the the early Middle Ages better deserved the title of "The Great". Charlemagne was born at Ingelheim, Germany, on 2 April 742. He was the son of Pepin III () and Bertrada II (of Laon). He married Hildegarde (of Swabia) circa 771.2 Charlemagne died on 28 January 814 at Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen), Rhineland, Germany, at age 71.3

Drucilla (Fortenberry ?)1 (F) b. circa 1801, d. before 1870 William R. Sinclair married Drucilla ca. 1822 in Anson County, NC. According to family tradition of the descendants of Leonidas Randolph Sinclair, Drucilla was a Fortenberry. This has not been proved. It is known that there were Fortenberrys in Anson County in the mid to late 1700's. There were numerous land records between 1746 and 1782 under various spellings (Fortenberry, Falkenborough, Falkenberry, Falkenbury, Falkinbury, Falconbury, etc.). One Fortenberry researcher concluded that since no Fortenberrys were in the 1790 census, that they had all removed to South Carolina. It is entirely possible that there were still some Fortenberrys in Anson county that did not get enumerated in that census. Drucilla was born at North Carolina, circa 1801.2 She married William R.
