As the long hot days of summer come to an end, autumn arrives with it's crisp, cool shortened days. And our thoughts turn towards preparation for the long cold wintery season ahead.Autumn days are bright reds, oranges, yellows, and even varied shades of browns.  As the greens of spring and summer  fade away and plant life goes into hibernation for the frigid wintry days ahead.

Cold frigid morning
      heavy frost all around.
        He has a hearty breakfast
and hot coffee,
dressed in layers

against the fingers
of bitter cold
he traipses to storage shed
and hefts the axe.

                                                                                                             Walks briskly to the woodpile

a spring in his step.
Squints upwards at the sun
thro' newly bared branches.
Breath a visible vapor.
Places first piece of wood on stump,
swings the axe in an arc.
Ah the crisp splitting of the wood,
a satisfying sound.
One chunk after another
repetitive motions.

Satisfaction felt within as
this pile gets smaller
while that one grows bigger.
Sun moves quickly across the sky
shortness of days very noticeable.

Screen door slams!
glancing up while placing
more wood on the growing pile.
Smile spreads across his face
as she approaches
carrying two steaming mugs
of hot chocolate.
Eyes meet as he takes the mug
as well as a much needed break.
Smiles exchanged, mean so much.
He happy to be cared for
she thinking of the warmth
and cuddlin' in front of the fires

built with wood
split by his hardworking hands.
She waits while he finishes.
Together they walk
back to the house.

Just as the autumn days are short, so is this page. Short but pleasant to the senses, and the love shared in this verse is long lasting and sweet.
