Barren Winter Barren sapless tree, dark silhouettes against skies of gray. Doors and windows tightly closed against winters' chill Quakerish adorned earth cloaked in browns and grays. Life lies dormant, all festivity hidden. Nature sleeps through endless colorless day. Absorbing the grayness, souls wither become overcast with futility. Gray days fade too early into darkness a forboding heaviness settles within artificial light replaces lifegiving sunshine. Sweaters layered over long sleeves woolens and flannels , cozy and warm. Barren Winter
Barren sapless tree,
dark silhouettes against skies of gray.
Doors and windows tightly closed
against winters' chill
Quakerish adorned earth
cloaked in browns and grays.
Life lies dormant, all festivity hidden.
Nature sleeps through endless colorless day.
Absorbing the grayness, souls wither
become overcast with futility.
Gray days fade too early into darkness
a forboding heaviness settles within
artificial light replaces lifegiving sunshine.
Sweaters layered over long sleeves
woolens and flannels , cozy and warm.
Drapes pulled tight against draft's chill.
Warm inside, occasionally peering thro' panes
etched with intricate, delicate, icy scrawls.
Dark, laden clouds hang heavily
eventually releasing fine flurries,
imperceptible at first,
increasing til the air is filled
with a frenzy of flurries
Changing to fluffy snowflakes
dancing in the atmosphere,
avoiding winters' icy fingertips,
frolicking on their journey to blanket the ground.
Curtains pulled back, excitement stirs within
to see movement outside
as dullness of winter is covered
with diamond-like glittering snow.
Nature again entertains the soul.

Winter's Folly
sky void of color hued splay
absence of sun dawn is gray
hoary air brittle iced
frenzied flurries
thick, downy flakes
ermine cloaked evergreens
fenceposts sport rounded caps
steps skirted with
winters' embroidery
lamposts cast a glow
upon forming galoshes
mailboxes shawled
earth clothed white
silence empowers
this frigid pristine scene
snow keeps falling
landscape frosted
window ledges softly adorned
clinging to panes
temperature rises a few degrees
streets and sidewalks warm
into dirty grey ribbons
nature's artistry
fleeting again!
