Jamaica's telemarketing industry began with the establishment of the Caribbean's first information processing park, the Jamaica Digiport International Limited (JDI) located in the Montego Bay Free Zone.

Owned jointly by AT&T, Cable and Wireless Plc. of Britain and Telecommunication of Jamaica (TOJ), their objective is to facilitate the development of industry in Jamaica, particularly in data entry, telemarketing reservations and the information processing industries by providing the highest quality telecom services at a cost that will allow its customers to provide services at rates that will be internationally competitive.

  2. Training facilities

    Training in data entry is offered through the Human Employment and Resource Training (HEART) Academies at Stony Hill in Kingston and the Kenilworth Academy in Hanover. The International Information Processors Group (a consortium of six of the leading data entry companies) provide their own training programme in association with the HEART Training programme.

    A new centre was recently established in the Montego bay Free Zone by the Kenilworth HEART academy to provide trained operators to companies located in the zone. Existing operators contribute to the curriculum taught.

    On the job training is also offered by most companies. Data entry operators are usually high school graduates with typing skills.

    Supervisory, technical and managerial level employees are available from among the graduates of the island's two (2) main tertiary institutions - the University of Technology (UTECH) and the University of the West Indies (UWI). In addition, there are a number of Community Colleges affiliated with leading secondary institutions.
