Like it or not, Pornography has become the number one biggest industry out there on the internet. Literally millions of web pages, both commercial and amateur, exist on the web to cater for the sexual appetites of surfers world wide. However, the whole commercial web porn empire has, in the face of growing competition, become increasingly more insidious over the past few years, to a point where this industry has become the internet's greatest problem.

While I appreciate erotic photography as much as the next man, the extent that a large number of web sites have gone to in order to "lure in the punter" verges on invasive, and is certainly deceptive. An innocent search engine inquiry may well result in a large number of listings that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic being researched, as sex site webmasters have become masters in the art of "metatagging" and text embedding.

For example, a search for a pop star, "Mariah Carey pix" on Webferet returns FIVE of the first 20 sites listed, a quarter no less, as being adult porn sites, two of which proclaim to contain "preteen pubescent pornpix". That could have been your 12 year-old son looking for pop star pinups!

Quite frankly, the whole scene is quite out of control. If you are a parent and are concerned over what your children are viewing, I would recommend continual supervision while they are on the internet. It should noted however, that many of the commercial erotica web sites do not actually give what they purport to offer. Our consumer laws do not apply in the international arena that the web operates in, and false advertising is rife out there. Furthermore, while most porn sites are easy to subscribe to, they can be very much harder to cancel your membership to. Be VERY wary of whom you go flashing your VISA card numbers to in the world of cyber-erotica!

Take note also that there are thousands of such sites where access is free of charge. Many of these are entirely free, while others are membership sites that provide free areas containing pictures, stories, movies, etc. These are of course deliberate lures to tempt you to take up membership to the respective sites. Another matter should of course be addressed first though, and that is the legality of the material being offered. Being an unmoderated environment, the web contains sites dedicated to all sorts of fringe activities, such as bestiality, "golden showers", sadomasochism, and many others that are technically illegal to view here in New Zealand. This advice should not be taken too lightly - the very practice of downloading just one picture that could be determined to be objectionable constitutes an offence, which, depending upon your subsequent actions, could result in a range of charges from "possession of...", to "distribution of...", even "the making of an objectionable publication", all offences under the Films, Videos and Publications Act 1993. Believe me, people are being prosecuted on a daily basis in New Zealand for activities that many of them thought to be basically harmless. This is however no defence. Internal Affairs officers DO monitor the internet and they CAN gain access to your internet activities through your service provider.
