| Anime Mix Lists |
Mixes of music from anime, by voice actors, that reminds people I know of anime, from AMVs, or occasionally by J-Rockers. All mixes can be burned to a 700MB CD-R as a playable CD. The persons for whose sake these are uploaded know who they are. All others are welcome to these as well, if they would like to hear. These will all be uploaded eventually, but Shounen Onmyouji is currently my priority. Mixed by Skinner unless otherwise noted.

Subtext Rating Scale
|
It's not that the world needed an absolute scale upon which all subtext could be ranked. We just thought it was fun and illustrative.
This began with an offhand question in the breakroom at work ("On a scale of 1 to Okita [ie, Hijikata/Okita], where would you rank Doumeki/Watanuki?") and was eventually refined for presentation in the Yaoi Aesthetic panel we debuted at Katsucon 2007. The scale is only for the purpose of ranking how much subtext exists between a given pair of people who are not shown to be involved or in love in the course of any canon version of the story. For this purpose, The Prince of Tennis Dream Live 1st and other live action musicals unfortunately cannot be considered canon. So, Ooishi and Eiji are on the list, because the clearly-a-date in the Dream Live 1st is not being taken into account, whereas Touya and Yukito in Card Captor Sakura are disqualified due to the fact that they do become canonically involved by the end of the manga.
The Scale Itself
|
Level 0
Pairing: Urameshi Yuusuke/Kuwabara Kazuma
Series: Yuu Yuu Hakusho
Let's face it -- Mr. "Boo, I'm a ghost" and his friend are both straight, and we wouldn't want it any other way. If you slash them, you're just making it up. |
|
Level 1
Pairing A: Leorio/Kurapica
Series: Hunter x Hunter
The author of this series has a habit of putting a somewhat feminine, pretty character in his stories, and of trying to make that character slash with another in order to attract female readership. In the opinion of the staff, this attempt failed due to the utter lack of chemistry and Kurapica's seeming actively uninterested in the prospect of becoming involved with Leorio. Yes, there is subtext, but it's awkward and mostly irrelevant.
|
|
Pairing B: Hatake Kakashi/Umino Iruka
Series: Naruto
While a majority of the staff do ship KakaIru, we will be the first to admit that the only support the show really gives this pairing lies in the occasional "family portraits" of Team 7 plus Iruka, and assorted memorabilia that features the two of them together. We feel this is mostly the reaction of the creators to a decision made in the fanbase, and cannot be certain that these two characters ever interact outside the office. |
|
Level 2
Pairing: Hiei/Kurama
Series: Yuu Yuu Hakusho
See above note regarding Hunter x Hunter. Same author. This, however, was not quite so unbelievable as the two characters do spend an extended amount of time in each other's presence willingly. Also, they can boast of having more offical art of the two of them in compromising poses than I was able to find for any other pairing on this list.
|
|
Level 3
Pairing: Touya Akira/Shindou Hikaru
Series: Hikaru no Go
The first of the Rival Levels. With nothing else at all to support a romantic interest, their Go rivalry provides enough tension and personal interest between the characters to make this a viable pairing for fan fiction.
|
|
Level 4
Pairing: Lex Luthor/Clark Kent
Series: Smallville
Until we find an adequate example from anime, Lex and Clark will have to do. Please note, comic book fans, this is in reference to Smallville in particular.
|
|
Level 5
Pairing A: Uchiha Sasuke/Uzumaki Naruto
Series: Naruto
These two represent our upper bound for subtext between a pair of rivals, although recently they've been pushing for a higher ranking. We don't expect them to get it: getting higher on the list requires a certain amount of subtlety in everyday interaction, and this pair tends more toward explosive declarations. They're more likely to get upgraded to text than to Level 6.
|
|
Pairing B: Roy Mustang/Edward Elric
Series: FullMetal Alchemist
Our absolute middle, chosen as an excellent balancing point for the kinds of relationships above and below. At this point, it becomes difficult to write off their interest in each other as anything but an interest in the person himself. They are also demonstrably attached to each other. It is still, however, seriously violent to the canon to declare that they are actively involved at any point within the series timeline. Which is not to say that we do not support 1) Well-written fanfics that do such violence or 2) Well-written fanfics that suppose a future involvement. We absolutely support these things.
|
|
Level 6
Pairing: Ran Shuuei/Li Kouyuu
Series: Saiunkoku Monogatari
Too few people have seen this show. We would have to say that, speaking of strict canon, they are almost certainly not romantically involved during the story's timeline. They are one another's most important person, however, and one can hardly be faulted for thinking they have chemistry. They're adorable.
|
|
Level 7
Pairing A: Sephiroth/Cloud Strife
Series: Final Fantasy VII and peripheral entities
This represents the transfer point from relationships whose existence requires justification to relationships whose non-existence requires justification. Maybe there never was a requited interest between these two at any time, or even a personal interest of any kind. If you suppose that lack of extreme personal interest, you will have to create your own explanation for why Sephiroth talks to Cloud at all (let alone say what he says) and for why Cloud as Cloud (not as his memory of Zack) behaves toward Sephiroth the way he does. We won't help you. We already have an explanation we like just fine.
|
|
Pairing B: Sha Gojyo/Cho Hakkai
Series: Gensoumaden Saiyuki
Oh, come on. You've seen the series.
|
|
Level 8
Pairing: Hiwatari Satoshi/Niwa Daisuke
Series: DN Angel
If you're familiar with DN Angel, you know what it means for one person to trigger the transformation of one of these two people into their alter ego. Knowing that Daisuke is Satoshi's trigger for transforming into Krad makes for a fairly well established one-sided interest, but there is no such evidence that our hero requites. In fact, he seems somewhat straight. As Satoshi has not raised the point with Daisuke and is not likely to do so any time soon, this remains subtext.
|
|
Level 9
Pairing A: Tezuka Kunimitsu/Fuji Syuusuke
Series: Prince of Tennis
With several episodes explaining in no uncertain terms that they only have eyes for each other, on and off the court, they were already up here. I'll even offer to discard the chibi episodes where they're married and share a bed. There's still the scene where they're walking off into a snowy sunset together under a single umbrella (all stereotypical romantic elements) as the screen fades to sepia. The animators might as well have drawn a heart around the two of them.
|
|
Pairing B: Ooishi Syuuichirou/Kikumaru Eiji
Series: Prince of Tennis
One doesn't really need to outline an argument for the Golden Pair having subtext. In addition to their interactions in all the episodes of the series where they appear, all the movies, and all the episodes released so far in the OVA, they get matching rings in the Band of Princes AMV. This goes beyond a good doubles combination. They're just married.
|
|
Pairing C: Tsuzuki Asato/Kurosaki Hisoka
Series: Yami no Matsuei
We did need something at this level that didn't come from Prince of Tennis. These two are a more classic example of two characters who are clearly intended to have feelings for each other that are blatantly evident but never discussed as such nor acted upon. Firmly in the realm of subtext, but as their relationship is a focus of the story, and feelings appear both present and mutual, they rank as high-level subtext.
|
|
Level 10
Pairing: Hijikata Toshizou/Okita Souji
Series: PeaceMaker Kurogane
Aristotle speaks of a boundary as a point that is both the end of one thing and the beginning of an adjacent thing. This is the boundary between subtext and text. Either one considers them the most subtle text-level pairing imaginable, or the best established subtext-level pairing. In either case, there is no plausible deniability that these two are presently involved in canon. They never state outright that they're sleeping together, but we feel this is so clearly demonstrated that such a statement would be unnecessary.
|
By the way, Doumeki/Watanuki subtext was rated at about 8.5.

Anime Character Phonetic Alphabet
|
A classic distraction. You're probably familiar at least in passing with the classic "Alpha Bravo Charlie" phonetic alphabet. There are tons of them, of course, several for every language that has ever needed clarification for how something is spelled. I even found one that mimics Morse Code (every syllable with an O is a dash, all other syllables are dots). So, while testing computers at work, I decided to make one for anime characters, much to Sumeria's chagrin.
| LETTER | CLASSIC | MORSE | ANIME |
| A | Alpha | Arno | Alucard |
| B | Bravo | Borvaselin | Basara |
| C | Charlie | Coburg-Gotha | Crawford |
| D | Delta | Doria | Dornkirk |
| E | Echo | Ernst | Edward |
| F | Foxtrot | Friedrichsroda | Fuji |
| G | Golf | Gomorrha | Griffith |
| H | Hotel | Herrenzimmer | Howl |
| I | India | Ida | Ichigo |
| J | Juliet | Jawohl-Odol | Jiraya |
| K | Kilo | Kolberg-Ost | Kurapica |
| L | Lima | Leonidas | L |
| M | Mike | Motor | Masahiro |
| N | November | Nora | Naru |
| O | Oscar | Oekonom | Ogata |
| P | Papa | Per-Motorrad | Pakunoda |
| Q | Quebec | Quohnsdorf-bei-Forst | Quatre |
| R | Romeo | Revolver | Ranma |
| S | Sierra | Sabine | Shin |
| T | Tango | Tod | Tezuka |
| U | Uniform | Uniform | Uzumaki |
| V | Victor | Verbrennungstod | Van Fanel |
| W | Whiskey | Weltnordpol | Wolfram |
| X | X-Ray | Xolabaphon | Xellos |
| Y | Yankee | York-Yellowstone | Yankumi |
| Z | Zulu | Zoroaster | Zagato |
Obviously, these only work for English Romaji, and then only in a certain system thereof. And if you feel that making "L" the code word for the Letter L is somehow pointless, feel free to use "Light" instead, but isn't it cute?

| Random Internet Personality Quiz Result--
I occasionally take quizzes because they're amusing, but rarely save the results. This one, however, came with a picture that I actually quite liked. |
Your result for What Your Taste in Art Says About You Test... Traditional, Vibrant, and Tasteful24 Islamic, 4 Impressionist, 16 Ukiyo-e, -28 Cubist, -30 Abstract and 20 Renaissance!
Islamic art is developed from many sources: Roman, Early Christian, and Byzantine styles were taken over in early Islamic architecture; the architecture and decorative art of pre-Islamic Persia was of paramount significance; Central Asian styles were brought in with various nomadic incursions; and Chinese influences . Islamic art uses many geometical floral or vegetable designs in a repetitive pattern known as arabesque. It is used to symbolize the transcendent, indivisible and infinite nature of Allah.
People that like Islamic art tend to be more traditional people that appreciate keeping patterns that they learned and experienced from their past. It is not to say that they are not innovative personalities, they just do not like to let go of their roots. They like to put new ideas into details and make certain that they will work before sharing them with others. Failure is not something they like to think about because they are more interested in being successful and appreciated for their intelligence. These people can also be or like elaborate things in their life as long as they are tasteful. They tend to prefer geometric patterns and vibrant colors.
