ANIME MIX XXXI: Hemp Toast
Three times as strong as the toast you buy domestically.
This particular album was named in honor of Tezuka Kunimitsu, occasionally referred to as "Toast" by several of us here. His song, "Road", caused Amy to comment that Tezuka would probably never sing a song like that unless someone had slipped him mind-altering chemicals. Not that this is unusual for image singles... We promptly decided that "Hemp Toast" should become an Anime Mix. Some were nervous I'd decide to make it yet another Prince of Tennis theme mix, but I really did need something to break up this block of them. Thus, a perfectly normal Anime Mix dedicated to all those moments that make us think, "What were they smoking?!"
Some of these earned their places for being out of character, and some for being entirely in character. Finding "Un Soir" particularly surprised me, since I had understood that Ishida Akira had a policy of refusing to do any image singles (since Slayers), but I guess Prince of Tennis won that argument. Special Notes Include:
- "Feel My Soul" - There are two versions of this song floating around. The other one is a Fuji Syuusuke image single. As many may know, Kimeru played Fuji Syuusuke in several TeniPuri Musicals, but I didn't realize he had also recorded this song until I stumbled across a page with his complete works. I do not know which came first.
- "Charm Point ha naki bokuro" - As if this song wouldn't have made it here on its own merits, I wish to note that the single made the Top 30 Oricon singles list in Japan. That's how I found out it existed.
- "Mouretsu FAIYA~ Yuuutsu wo buttobase" - I try to limit myself to two Gravitation songs on any given mix, so I picked the two that were the most strange (with the exception of "Rockin' Station" which is already scheduled to be on more mixes than possibly other song. This is not my fault.) This particular song I have only seen listed anywhere as "Minna Minna Minna", so I included that as part of the title, but the track list that came with my CD gives the above title. Yes, there are that many U's in the correct romanization. It translates to: Raging Fire, drive off Melancholy.
- "You Give Love a Bad Name" - Included in honor of a Saiyuki music video we all rather liked.
- "Valentine Kiss" - If you say, "What?! Another Valentine Kiss?"... well, so did I. I can't believe the mileage TeniPuri is getting out of this song. There's still one version I haven't included on any mixes yet (Oshitari Yuushi), and I have a feeling it's not the last one we'll see. Also. Gosh, Sanada sings with verve.
