It was the summer of 1999 - the perfect time to go backpacking in Europe. I had just quit my job prior to going to medical school, and Teddy was able to take a few weeks off from work. So with his accumulated frequent flyer miles, Teddy flew me off to Europe in the luxurious connoisseur class (imagine dining on champagne, shrimp salad, and filet mignon on an airplane)! In 18 days, we backpacked our way through seven countries: Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. The book, "Let's Go: Europe," became our Bible.

Anne Frank went into hiding in her father's office building annex in Amsterdam in 1942. Her famous diary recorded her events until August 1944 when her family was found and taken to Auschwitz. In 1945, Anne Frank died at Bergen-Belsen, two weeks before the camp was freed. |
