It was the summer of 1999 - the perfect time to go backpacking in Europe. I had just quit my job prior to going to medical school, and Teddy was able to take a few weeks off from work. So with his accumulated frequent flyer miles, Teddy flew me off to Europe in the luxurious connoisseur class (imagine dining on champagne, shrimp salad, and filet mignon on an airplane)! In 18 days, we backpacked our way through seven countries: Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. The book, "Let's Go: Europe," became our Bible.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam was our first stop. This is a photo outside the main train station.

Amsterdam is a commercialized city well-known for its beautiful water canals (the city is below sea level), legalized prostitution, and wide marijuana use.

Anne Frank went into hiding in her father's office building annex in Amsterdam in 1942. Her famous diary recorded her events until August 1944 when her family was found and taken to Auschwitz. In 1945, Anne Frank died at Bergen-Belsen, two weeks before the camp was freed.

Belgium

The only thing better in Belgium than its chocolates, are its waffles! Belgian waffles, well-saturated in oil, are wonderfully delicious!

Brugges is a city in Belgium, the capital of Flanders, and possible one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The streets are cobblestone, the canals wind beneath overhanging willow trees, and the chocolates are supreme.

Luxembourg

Luxembourg is tiny, land-locked country in Europe. The old fortress sits atop a hill over the valley of the Petrusse river, and consists of a network of subterranean caves and tunnels, or casemates. I'm sitting on a cannon in this photo
