'I am tired of that'

I am tired of not following the words of my guru: I am that, or more simply �I am�. I am that silent witness of that undivided consciousness without limitation or comprehension.
Of course to believe these words is proving to be a difficult task.  One gets glimpses from time to time, but they seldom seem to be of any duration. Most of the time, the mind is far too busy occupied with other thoughts that seem to be far more interesting and certainly all consuming.

The best that one can do is to endure with some discipline and trust that the words of the guru are genuine. By following his words; liberation, (a state seemingly common among Indian sages and genuine devotee�s) is guaranteed.

Indeed a genuine seeker of liberation was spoilt for choice in the 20th century. (at least in some parts of India) In the 21st century, it is the devotee�s turn to provide this choice. Thus far it is proving difficult to live up to the words and actions of the masters of the past.

One such master was Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. This is what Maharaj had to say in response to a visitor�s question: �But can anything be left for good?� The answer he gave is perhaps out of context, but it is very revealing from another perspective:
�You want something like around-the-clock ecstasy. Ecstasies come and go, necessarily, for the human brain cannot stand the tension for a long time. A prolonged ecstasy will burn out your brain, unless it is extremely pure and subtle. In nature nothing is at a stand still, everything pulsates, appears and disappears. Heart, breath, digestion, sleep, and waking � birth and death; everything comes and goes in waves. Rhythm, periodicity, harmonious alternation of extremes; is the rule. No use rebelling against the very pattern of life. If you seek the immutable, go beyond experience. When I say: remember �I am� all the time, I mean: come back to it repeatedly�. No particular thought can be the mind�s natural state, only silence. Not the idea of silence, but silence itself. When the mind is in its natural state, it reverts to silence spontaneously after every experience or, rather, every experience happens against the background of silence.
 Now, what you have learnt here becomes the seed. You may forget it � apparently. But it will live and in due season sprout and grow and bring forth flowers and fruits. All will happen by itself. You need not do anything, only don�t prevent it.
