Recent Operations

25-27 October 2003, Out of Area Ops - Western Sydney. Rescue 1 was dispatched to assist Sydney Western Division following a severe hail-storm that resulted in over 350 calls for assistance to the local SES units. Work was primarily securing property against further damage from rain and clearing of trees and debris.

12 October 2003, community event - Ashfield Carnival of Cultures Rescue 1, 2 and the Flood Boat were on display for the community . Many enquiries were answerred on what the SES does and how we as volunteers help the local community. Special appearances by Paddy the Platypus and a large number of orange helium baloons were big hits with volunteers of the future while mum and dad received information on how to prepare their homes for storms.

14 September 2003, community event - Flora Sydney Marathon members assisted NSW Police and event organisers with road closures and traffic diversions on the City-West Link from Anzac Bridge to James St.

13 September 2003, community event - JEF Foundation.
Provide lighting and crowd safety for openning of new premises at Callan Park.

29-30 August 2003, Out of Area Ops - Illawarra District
. Rescue 1 and 2 were dispatched to Wollongong City SES to assist in the clean-up from severe wind-storms on 24 August. Work was primarily making safe fallen trees and temporary repairs to roofs ahead of more forecasted bad weather. Rescue 1 remained in Illawarra District on 30 August assisting Nowra SES while Rescue 2 returned to base to attend possible local incidents resulting from the forecast bad weather.

25-27 August 2003, Severe windstorms affect Sydney
. Ashfield-Leichhardt SES responded to over 130 calls for assistance attended from 0700hrs on Sunday to 2200hrs on Tuesday. At the height of the storm the Ashfield-Leichhardt Operations Centre received 45 calls for assistance in 30 minutes. Sunday afternoon/evening saw up to 4 crews responding and 1 reconnaisance crew assessing damage up to 0100hrs. Rescue 2.rolled out the gate again at 0700hrs shortly followed by Rescue 1 on Monday. Monday saw more calls received by the Operations Centrewith two teams in the field through Monday and Tuesday.

The majority of incidents were results of fallen trees with the occasional "missing" roof. Both the community and crews were relieved that the wind-storm was dry as this meant property damage was reduced and crews could operate safely and comfortabl
