There is a top clown. He/she is the White Face clown. Hobos are at the bottom.
There are basically three categories of clown faces from which to choose. Each type of makeup has a name. Our first, and most known face, is called a White Face. This look is obtained by using something called "grease paint." Yuck, you say. Who wants to put grease on their face. Well, it is not actually grease, but a makeup with a thick consistency. "White Face" is the straight clown in most skits.
Auguste Clowns us a flesh-tone base. The "Auguste Clown" is the silly guy that makes you fall out of your seat with his antics.
Last, but not least, is the "Character Clown." He uses exaggerated costumes such as a hobo or a tramp. The Hobo uses makeup to suggest an unshaved face and tired eyes.
I would like to mention at this time, that clowns get their character not just from the clothes they wear or "face" they have choosen. Clowns have a code of ethics.
