Position and Movement

[the animations may take a minute or two to load]

Position and Movement 1

  • First, if you can take the puck directly to the net, you should do that.
  • Second, if you can pass the puck to a team mate near the net, you should do that.
  • If you can't do either of the first two attack procedures and we have control of the puck, then the team will have to settle into the following positions.
  • Shown below are the five basic offensive positions that everyone should be trying to occupy.
  • The basic purpose is to get the puck to the front of the net, where our player can shoot or tip it into the net.
  • If you cannot make a good pass or shot to the front of the net, then pass it to another teammate.
  • Use the boards to pass the puck around defenders to your teammates.
  • Note that the forward in front of the net, stays there.
  • Note that one of the defence are in the high slot.  The other is up against the boards.
  • As conditions change you will need to move from the positions of the left image to the positions of the right image (and vice versa).

Position and Movement 2

  • In this example, the team is in position on the left side of the ice, but the puck has ended up in the far corner (perhaps from an errant pass or a failed clearing attempt).
  • The team needs to move and repossess the puck.
  • First to note is that the forward in front of the net, stays there.
  • The other two forwards move in unison to the right.  The one forward will pick up the puck and pass it along the boards to the forward behind the net .  From there, she can pass it to the forward in front of the net for a shot, or to any other teammate.
  • The defence also move in unison to the right.

Position and Movement 3

  • In this example, the team is in position on the left side of the ice, but the puck has ended up near the blue line on the far side (perhaps from an errant pass or a failed clearing attempt).
  • The team needs to move and repossess the puck.
  • First to note is that the forward in front of the net, stays there.
  • The other two forwards move in unison to the right.
  • The defence also move in unison to the right to pick up the puck.  One option (as shown) is to pass the puck up along the boards, eventually ending up behind the net.  Another option is to simply pass or shoot the puck on net.
