Offside

  • Scenario 1 - consider the diagram at left.
    • Our defencewoman has the puck outside the offensive zone.
    • All of the forwards are offside, and are in the yellow area.
    • Even though the forwards are offside (and in the yellow area), the defencewoman should shoot the puck back in to the offensive zone.
    • Note that the other defencewoman is at the centre ice face off spot.
    • All of the forwards should skate directly to the blue line in an attempt to cancel the delayed offside.
    • When the forwards reach the blue line, they make a fairly sharp turn and get back in to the offensive zone as soon as the last team mate is outside the zone (or skate along the blue line until everyone is out).
    • Talk to each other to help each other know when you are offside and when you are onside.
  • Scenario 2
    • If the forwards are deeper inside the zone, that is not in the yellow area, then the defencewoman will have to wait until they have reached this yellow area before shooting the puck in.
    • Exception, if the defencewoman is being pressured by an opponent, shoot the puck in anyway.  It's better to get a whistle than to give up the puck in this position.

Something else to consider:
  • Suppose the other team has the puck in their end and you are offside.
  • Probably the ref and the other team are all yelling at you that you are offside, ignore them.
  • Sometimes when you are offside, the best thing to do is to harass the puck carrier and make her make a bad play (rather than allowing them an easy route out of their end by trying to get onside).
  • Hopefully, what you can do is have her make a bad pass out of the zone, your team mate intercepts it, you get onside, and our team attacks their zone again.
  • Now of course if you touch the puck when you are offside the play is whistled and stopped, that's okay.  However, it may be ruled an intentional offside and the referee will have the face off deep in our end.  Really!
  • So when you harass the other player try to keep your stick away from the puck if you can.
  • Also, if you're going to stay offside, you have to make it look like you think you are onside.  So don't make eye contact with the referee as he is telling you that you're offside.
