Lesson 2: "Snack Time" - PRACTICE

Did you notice a difference in the way that Dad spoke with his son this time around? Did you see him using any good examples of strategies relating to:

Expectations and Self Talk?

Now that you know the importance of these two strategies, please evaluate what you've seen in the second video clip and identify what you think is the most important step that Dad took to help his son's language development in this conversation:

Dad waited for his son to request some juice with words before giving it. Dad gave his son the juice.

Dad talked about what he was doing.

Dad taught his son good manners. Dad consistently waited for responses, or cued them, before proceeding with the conversation. Dad talked about why he was pouring himself the juice.

Dad kept his self-talk to utterances of 3 to 5 words each, which is right about where his son's language development is now.

Dad faced his son while speaking with him.

Dad encouraged longer strings of words whenever his son gave him single-word answers.

Terrific! Great job!
