WHO might benefit from using this site?

If you have a very young child (birth to age 7) with language delay resulting from hearing loss, you might feel like you are all alone in a strange land with a whole new set of skills to learn, people to meet and obstacles to overcome. You might not have planned this stop on your life's path, but here you are. We've included a lovely passage here that we hope you'll find as insightful as we do. Click here for Emily Perl Kingsley's Welcome to Holland.

It might seem difficult to think about having to communicate in a whole new way with your child, but if you're interested in supporting your child's language learning, then this site was created just for you to assist in making the process easier!

The techniques that we'll share here are presented from an auditory/oral perspective. Pursuing a communication system from this perspective means that you have chosen to:

  • concentrate on helping your child to focus on the hearing that he has available (called residual hearing),
  • seek aggressive ways to increase what he can hear through amplification (hearing aids, cochlear implants, sound field systems), and...
  • utilize any means possible to help your child learn to understand and use spoken language.

If this is the communicative approach that you have chosen for your family, then you are in the right place! The techniques you'll learn here should be very helpful as you work to create a language-rich environment that will support your child!
