Club News 2006September 17 –Eleven wings went to Owl’s Head for the Made in USA car meet. Dennis Wright had set it up so that our wings were displayed at the meet. It was a beautiful fall day and everyone seemed to enjoy our time at Owl's Head Museum. It was really neat to see all the antique airplanes actually flying above. Our lunch stop was going to be at Moody's Diner but they were packed so we ate at the Chinese Restaurant across the road. They were having a buffet which everyone seemed to enjoy. September 9 – Cole Museum and monthly meeting. We departed Hannaford's parking lot after the short meeting. Earl took us on the scenic route through many small towns on our way to Cole's Museum in Bangor. We arrived there shortly after noon. Everyone seem to enjoy all the antiques in the museum. It was another really nice sunny day for riding our wings with our friends. August 27 - Five wings met at Tim Horton's in Auburn for a ride to Small Falls. Where the weather forecast was predicting rain early for the western part of the state, after a group discussion, we all decided to head inland. We changed our destination to the Bangor Festival. We headed out on Route 202 and stopped in South China for a rest stop. At the Festival everyone enjoyed the food and music. Richard, of course, especially enjoyed the strawberry shortcake while others enjoyed the blueberry shortcake. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Another wonderful day for getting out on our wings and riding with our friends. August 19 - Four wings met at Denny's Restaurant in Auburn for a ride to Portland Lighthouse . We headed out for our destination by way of route 11 west. On the way we stopped at Quaker Ridge overlook in Casco which had beautiful views. A few people mentioned coming back to the area for a fall foliage run. We then proceeded down Rt. 302 to Windham where we avoided the shopping area by taking the Whites Bridge Raod and then picking up Rt. 35 south to Rt. 22 East to Scarborough . We then proceeded to Cape Elizabeth and the Portland Headlight where we ventured around taking pictures and enjoying the ocean views. There were lots of sailboats and other sightseeing boats. We then headed through So. Portland and made our way to Captain Newick's Restaurant where we socialized and enjoyed lunch. We then proceeded to Portland and enjoyed the views at the Eastern Promonade where the bay was peppered with white sails. All in all a beautiful day for riding with our friends. August 12 - Chapter V Picnic - Again, this year, a bunch of members atteended Chapter V’s picnic in Madawaska, Maine. The weather did not cooperate again this year ( Allen thinks Jim and Linda order the rain and cold on purpose) but Linda insists its just Northern Maine. We all had a fantastic time there even with the uncooperative weather. The women sat and ate in the Screen House while the men sat in the garage. They couldn’t understand why all the good snacks were in the screen house, well, Hello----of course, it was for us Ladies……….. We all had such a great ride back---the weather was just great the next day, of course----we stopped at Grannies in Linneus to eat and eat and eat…………..Too much food but so good to the palate. August 6 - District Picnic - Again, this year, the District picnic was held at Allen and Claudette's home. There were approximately 55 people who attended, there was plenty of food although we did run out of Soda (which Claudette will get more of next year). There was plenty of food---the menu consisted of Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Hot Wings, Hot Sausages, Beans, several salads, again the famous fruit salads which were a great success, Corn on the Cob, Shrimp Cocktail, and many snacks. This year, Allen and Claudette added an Ice Cream Social which was a great success. There were members from Chapter F in Lincoln, Chapter D in Bangor and Chapter C in Lewiston and Chapter A in Sanford area. The only Chapter not represented was Chapter V from Aroostool County. The weather was just perfect as this was specially ordered by Allen and Claudette. Several members played Horse Shoes, and most of the others just socialized with each other. Many met new members, new friends. A honorary plaque was presented to Jeff and Irene Guifford from Chapter F in Lincoln for graciously being Chapter Directors for many years but now had to step down as Jeff is now involved in politics. We wish Jeff and Irene Guifford all the luck we can offer them. Allen and Claudette thanked everyone for attending and for the great support that all members give to them and this is their way of showing their appreciation to their members in Maine. Their term as District Directors is supposedly done on October 31, 2006 but due to fact that no one else has stepped up, they have agreed to serve their members for one more year as they are having so much fun doing this. The role of District Directors is a lot of fun because you meet so many new friends who just love to have fun which makes this position such an honor to serve. There were many door prizes won and those who did not win anything did get a poker necklace to wish them better luck next time. Next year the picnic will be held at Claudette and Allen's home again and we all know that if this is their last year, they both will miss having this picnic cause it seems from what Claudette has told me, she truly enjoys preparing for this picnic and looks forward to it. Claudette is just a Social Bug and loves to entertain. Maybe we can persuade her to continue with these picnics. Time will tell all. July 20-22 - Six wings met at the Kennebunk Rest Stop on the Maine Turnpike for a 9am departure to the New England District Rally in Vernon, CT. July 15th - Eight wings met at Roy's All Steak Hamburgers in Auburn, for a ride heading towards Errol, NH. It was a beautiful day for a ride. We stopped once along the way at a water falls. We also stopped at LL Cote's for shopping and socializing. We ate at the Northland Restaurant in Berlin. The service was so good that we ended up having our ice creams there. We left there approximately 2:30 heading down towards Gorham, NH, Bethel, ME and from there dispursed in groups heading towards homeward routes. July 9th - Meeting was held at McDonald's in Lewiston before our ride. Seven wings took off toward Cook's Corner where we met four more wings for our ride to Land's End on Bailey's Island. It was a beautiful day for riding and socializing. After leaving Bailey's Island Mike took us to Georgetown/Five Islands for ice cream on the pier. The parking was a little tight but we all managed to fit in. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Upon departing Georgetown and getting to Route 1, groups dispursed in the direction of their routes homeward bound. The weather remained great and everyone seemed to enjoy. June 25 - Hello all, Just to let you know that we had a great ride to Winterharbor today, left the house it was foggy, but, the weather was not cold and it cleared up nicely and turned out to be nice and warm and a great day. No rain at all. We were 5 bikes. Mike & Polly Trepanier, Dennis Libby, Art & Mel Lane, John & Mickey Poor, and us, Jack & Mariette Carey. . . . . . . . we all brought lunches, and ate at the park near the ocean, it was great. So sorry that more of you could not come on this ride, it was truly a wonderful day. By the time, we got home to Portland, we had put on about 400 miles on the bike. See you on the next ride. . . . . . . Jack & Mariette June 17 - Thank you to Mariette and Jack for graciously volunteering to plan and lead this ride. Ten wings and one truck met at Cole Farms in Gray for breakfast and a 9am departure. Destination was Kennebunkport. Jack and Mariette led the way while Duncan and Judy were tail gunners. Along the way we stopped at Reynolds Sports Center in Buxton for a rest stop. Some people met up with the Lunch Bunch group that meets at Reynolds and did some socializing. After leaving Reynolds we proceeded to the Kennebunkport area where Mariette and Jack pointed out the Wedding Cake House on our way through town. We arrived safely in the Kennebunkport area at approximately 10:30. Women dispursed to shop the novelty shops while the men found a cool place to gather and chat. Everyone met back at 11:45 to have lunch at The Landing Restaurant where Mariette had made reservations for noon. We had our own little room at the restaurant. Food and conversation were great. Everyone seemed to enjoy. After eating we departed for a ride north homeward bound along the coast. A highlight was Walker's Point , the Bush's retreat. Finally a beautiful sunny day for riding with our GWRRA friends. June 11 - Our ride to Deer Isle/Stoningham was cancelled due to weather conditions. June 3 - Our ride to Ossipee/Wolfboro and monthly meeting was cancelled due to weather conditions. May 20 – We all met at Hannaford Brothers in Gardiner. People said nothing would be open at Popham Beach area so it was decided to head toward Gray, Windham, Cornish, Hiram, Fryeburg, and Bridgton.. The ride started at 9am with twelve wings. We had a couple of new riders with us so we had a safety talk before embarking on our ride. We headed toward Wiscasset to pick up Norma who was waiting for us at the Bath Dairy Queen. We stopped at McDonald's in Windham for a coffee and rest break. We ate at a seafood restaurant in Cornish. We lucked out as it wasn't that crowded. They sat us at one long table accommodating all seventeen of us. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food and the service was great. After lunch a couple of bikes headed back to Portland area while the rest of us headed over towards Fryeburg area where we encountered large black clouds so we headed to Bridgton. It was only a small shower so the group started heading back to their home destinations. We all enjoy riding and and we travel many miles to meet up with friends for enjoyable outings -- The Gold Wing motto -- "Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge." We were thankful for a nice day to ride with our old and new friends. May 13 – Venco Wings was another rainy day just like last year. Club members met in Naples, ME. We carpooled and made it to the Open House despite the rain. Everyone enjoyed themselves. There were many door prizes and the food was good. As always, many of us did a lot of purchasing while we were there. Everyone seemed to have a good time despite the weather. May 6 – Four wings met at McDonald's in Lewiston to start their ride to the Kittery Trading Post. January 14th our chapter held a scheduled bowling outing in Rumford, ME. There were 15 people in attendance. Great turn out for a foggy night. Duncan and Judy did a great job making all the arrangements at Oxford Bowling Lanes. Thank you. Top scorers were: Peter, Mary, Allen and Bob in that order. The rest of us (Cheryl, Elmer, Rita, Duncan, Judy, Richard, Nancy, Claudette) don't want to be recognized for our scores. We want to thank Annette for being our official score keeper and for Jeff, Leslie, and Annette for cheering us on. We bowled, ate, and socialized for two and a half hours. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. There is talk of doing another bowling outing soon. |
