Maltese artists, mainly, decorated Maltas churches. They left an indelible mark on the countrys cultural heritage. Art, in Malta, was influenced, particularly after the arrival of the Order of St. John, by the developments in other European countries. The peak was reached in the XVII and XVIII centuries, when many churches were being built and decorated. Famous foreign artists were invited to work in churches and for a long period of time, they dominated the local scene. The Maltese artist learnt fast and created an individual style that compared well with the foreign and in many cases, was, even superior. Stefano Erardi (1630-1716) appeared on the scene, followed by Gann Nicola Buhagiar (1698-1752) Francesco Zahra (1710-1773) and others. Nearer to our times, we meet Giuseppe Cali (1846-1930), Giuseppe Calleja (1828-1915) and Lazzaro Pisani (1854-1932) We are going to, briefly review, their biographies and list some of their works in Maltese churches. A lot more needs to be researched, more works to be identified and attributions changed. Guzeppi Theuma 2006 |
