Baiata Vincenzo [active begining of 17 century]

Little is known about this painter.  He was possibly one of Filippo Paladini’s assistants and there are several stylistic connections with this renowned Italian Artist.  This is very evident from the only picture that we know exists, the Madonna of the Rosary in the Parish Museum,at Rabat.

Barbara Salvatore  [1835-1895]

From archival documents we find that Salvatore Barbara was active between 1859  to 1895.  Possibly born in 1835, he studied under Giuseppe Hyzler in Valletta. In 1852 he restored the Via Crucis in the Oratory of the Holy Sacrament at the Church of Porto Salvo, in Valletta.  There are indications that he also spent some time in Rome.

Barthet Esprit  [1919-1999]

Born in Valletta on the 6th of October 1919. Son of Camillo and Guzeppina Grixti.
He started art studies in Valletta, at the Government School of Arts.  He went to Rome where he attended the Regia Accademia di Belle Arti and later to England, at the Academy of Arts in Bath. In the early 1950s he started experimenting with cubism and the abstract. Much of his work can be admired in public places, Government Departments and in many private collections in Malta and abroad.
He was awarded the title of Knight of the Italian Republic by the Italian Government and  also invested as a member of the Order of St. John.
In 1944, he married Teresa Borg and had six children.
He died on the 4th of July 1999.

Bellanti Michele [1807-1883]

Bellanti was born in Imdina in 1807.  Studied art in Florence, Venice, and Rome. Although, by profession, he was a lawyer, as a young child,  he became very interested in the arts.  He was a very competent designer and followed Pietro Paolo Caruana as the Professor of Arts at the School of Drawing in Valletta.
He was married to Luisa Sciortino.
A good portrait artist but also worked well in watercolours and engravings.
He died in 1883.

Bonnici Giuseppe [1835 -1900]

Born in Senglea on the 11th of December 1835.  Son of Antonio and Carmela Pappalardo. He was the youngest of five brothers.  Studied in Rome under the direction of Tommaso Minardi.  In Tommaso Minardi e la sua Scuola, Roma. Ovidi says: “The Betrothal of Saint Joseph” was highly praised by Minardi.
His works are also found in Messina, Naples, Rome, Egypt, and Turkey.

Bonnici Cali Rafel  [1907-2002]

Born in Tarxien on the 6th of July 1907.  Son of Alfredo Bonnici and Maria Carmela Cali.  Studied art in 1926, at the Government School of Arts. He was for a time an instructor at the Technical Institute and at the Senior Lyceum.  He was also a member of the restoration unit in the National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta.  He worked a great deal for his native Village with historical publications and active service with several philanthropic organizations.  He was very prolific and painted many canvases, mainly depicting the Madonna. For his contribution to the arts, in 1954, he was elected Member Knight of the Magisterial Grace by the Order of St. John.
He died on the 6th of August 2002 and was buried in the Tarxien Village Cemetery.

According to the 19th Century, Maltese historian, Pietro Paolo Castagna, this artist was born in Vittoriosa.  Several of his canvases were destroyed in  World War II, when the Church of  St. Lawrence in Vittoriosa was severely damaged.

Borg John Martin  [b.1953]

John Martin Borg was born in Gzira on the 24th of February 1953.  Son of Carmelo and Rita Schembri.  Studied art at the Malta School of Arts under Harry Alden, Esprit Barthet (1967-1972) and under Vincent Apap (1977-1981)
In 1977 he graduated as a pharmacist at the Malta University
His works can be found in permanent exhibitions and private collections in Malta and abroad.
He is a good watercolorist and in 1985 he was the only Maltese ever to exhibit at the Royal Water Colour Open Exhibition, in London.  In the English Capital, his works can be found, also, in The Royal Collection and the Commonwealth Centre.
He is also given prominence in The World Health Centre. Geneva.
He is married to Doris Fearn and has four children.

Borg Martin  [b.1957]

Martin Borg was born in Rabat, Malta on the 6th of November 1957 and christened in Hamrun, son of Joseph and Lorenza Mamo.  Between 1970 and 1975, he attended the Malta School of Arts.  On the 27th of September 1979 he joined the Order of St. Theresa and was ordained a priest on the 9th of July 1987.
He is the author of several publications of spiritual nature.  His artistic talents include design and gold embroidery used in vestments and processional banners. These are found in many Maltese churches and local band clubs.
