Goyjo is a half-blood, with a demon father and a human mother. It resulted in Goyjo being human, and Dokugakuji, who is Goyjo's brother, being a demon. Goyjo didn't know anything about Dokugakuji until Goyjo met him when fighting Kougaiji. Goyjo's hair is a tabbo, a sign to prove that he is a half-blooded demon. All half-blooded humans have red hair and red eyes. The scars on his face were given to him by his stepmother when she wanted to kill him. However, in protection of his brother, Dokugakuji killed his-step mother so that Goyjo would survive.
Goyjo gambles for a living. Before he met Sanzo and Goku, he gambled to earn money, and is somehow very good at it. But when he rescues Hakkai, and Hakkai tells him that his hair reminds him of blood, Goyjo woke up, and decided to join Hakkai and the group to go to the West.
