pool guy

Pool Guy

Adobe Illustrator

This is a piece that one of my instructors told us to draw. The idea of a hollow head with a paintbrush inside wasn't really my idea, but this illustration differs from the assigned one significantly. I'm really pleased with the way it turned out.

alek illustration

Aleksandr

Adobe Illustrator

This illustration is of my step son, Alek. I used the pencil tool in Adobe Illustrator, and I used his kindergarten school photo as a template.

hourglass

Hourglass

Adobe Illustrator

The hourglass is one of my favorites because it was very difficult to draw. It is my best attempt at using the mesh tool in Adobe Illustrator - a tool used to create the highlights and shadow on the glass and the sand. I think it looks very realistic.

antikythera device

Antikythera Device

Adobe Illustrator

The Antikythera Device was a celestial calculator used by the ancient Greeks. It was dredged up from the bottom of the Mediteranian, and since then several replicas have been built. This is interesting to me because until this device was found, no one really knew the extent of the technical knowledge of ancient people This illustration shows the parts of the device, as well as how they fit together using transparency.

Cloud God

Cloud God

Adobe Photoshop

This is a piece I made pretty much by accident. I was messing around with Photoshop, overlaying pictures on top of other pictures, and this one struck me as something to keep. The figure is a photo of some oriental ceremonial costume that I got from National Geographic.

contrasting compositions

Contrasting Compositions: Soothing and Severe

Ink Pen

The assignment was to create two pieces that contrast eachother, but that also go together as a pair. I decided to choose two different moods and try and capture the essence of them. I used the same layout on each piece (in mirror image). The Severe piece uses jagged lines of varying thicknesses and solid fields of black to create more stark contrast. The soothing piece uses stippling to create a rounded, flowing loko to the shapes.

conceptual self portrait

Conceptual Self Portrait

Adobe Illustrator

This piece was meant to be a conceptual self portrait. If you look closely, there's a figure in the center, with a heart that's huge in comparison to the rest of her features. This was meant to symbolize how much love I have in me. The exremities of the body (arms, legs, and head) are twisted around and intertwined, only to return to the body in an endless loop. It was drawn using the pen tool in Illustrator, and it uses several gradients and drop shadows to created a 3D sort-of look.

howitzer shell

155 Caliber Howitzer Shell

Adobe Illustrator

Another example of my use of the mesh tool in Illustrator to create a 3D appearence on a 2D object. This is a drawing of a really big bullet. I was originally going to draw the Howitzer gun itself, but decided that there was too much detail involved.

kane illustration

Kane

Adobe Illustrator

I drew this in the same way I did the portrait of Aleksandr - with the pencil tool in Illustrator.

kane color illustration

Kane (Color)

Adobe Illustrator

This shows more sophisticated use of the pencil tool in Illustrator. I really like the way the wrinkles in clothing come out using this tool in color.

metamorphosis frame 1

Metamorphosis: Frame 1

Colored Pencil, Watercolor Pencil, Gouach Paint

I really like this piece a lot. The concept is of someone's head in the clouds. Or, more specifically, their brain floating away as balloons. This was an assignment in my first graphic design class. I was supposed to make 5 frames that show a metamorposis of something to something else. It was also a lesson in color theory. The color theory concepts used in this piece are: atmospheric perspective and contrast of saturation.

self portrait

Self Portrait

Marker Pen

This self portrait was done using reduced imagery. I outlined the basic areas of shadow and light from a photograph of myself, then used markers of varying grey tones to create large fields of solid color (compared to a continuous-tone image).

skateboard graphics

Skateboard Graphics

Adobe Illustrator

This has no real concept behind it, it's just a neat picture. I spent a lot of time on the detail in the bricks.

skull sketch

Skull Sketch

Pencil Sketch

This was one of the first pieces I did in my first graphic design class. Until I did this piece, I didn't think I could really draw well. Finding out that I could draw motivated me immensely in my studies. This sketch was a precurser to the metamorphosis piece above.

surrealist collage

Surrealist Collage

Adobe Photoshop

This piece was for an assignment in my Photoshop class. We had to do a surrealist collage of at least 3 separate images. I had a hard time with it at first, because I didn't really understand what made something surreal. I think in the end, though, I hit the nail on the head. If you look closely, the monks have clown faces.
