Red Raven Information:

The Bird-People

Red Raven's people have been called at various times: Bird-People, Birdmen, the Winged Ones and Avians. (the name Aerians has also been suggested, but like Winged Ones, it's taken)

Their home has been been called at various times: Sky-Isle, Sky-City and Aerie .

(quick definitions: An aerie is a bird's nest (or human habitation) built in on a high place. Avian refers to anything relating to birds. Aerians were 4th century cultists following Aerius, a presbyter who felt bishops should not have the authority they did, that prayers for the dead, fasting and Easter celebrations were unnecessary.)

Their early history is recorded, but almost everything else about them is unknown.

Location: (former) 8 miles high and mobile, (current) stuck sideways in a dimensional rift 8 miles above the surface of the earth.
Population: unknown
Other cities: See the Aerie entry or Other Birdmen section for more information.
Type Of Government: monarchy (type unknown)
Ruler: Red Raven (king)
Currency: unknown
Religion: Polytheist (mentioned: "gods of the stratosphere," "sky-gods" and the "dark god" that the Bloodravens worship)
Level of Technology: Highly advanced. On par with or just behind the Inhumans. Highly advanced genetic engineering.
Legal Representation: Goodman, Lieber, Kurtzberg & Holliway.
First appearance: Red Raven Comics #1

Names of representatives: Red Raven (given name unknown), Dania, Royal Scientist (given name unkown), Condor (given name unkown), Priestlord (leader of the Bloodravens, name unkown), Kestrus (red-headed female, at right); Wren (bald male, at left), Unnamed adoptive parents, [previous king] Aerivar XVIII; [in ancient past] Cheiros, Kylus

Other Birdmen: Obviously the idea of humanoids with feathers and/or wings isn't unusual in fiction, much less in Marvel, but there are some cases that just seem a bit too similar to be just coincidence. For example, see the birdmen of Sunev (circa 1941 AD) or Akah Ma'at (circa 10,000 BC). Both live on kingdoms floating above the earth having hid from mankind for centuries.

Physical Characteristics: Humanoid (decended from Inhumans) of different racial backgrounds. The vast majority of Bird-People have white-feathered wings, thousands of years ago Bird-People with other types of wings were all but exterminated. They hatch from eggs, apparently born with wings (unlike Inhumans, who are born looking human and remain so until expossure to Terrigen Mists). This genetic stability is probably due to genetic engineering by the Bird-People themselves. Average stength level, flight speed or other abilities unknown.

Mode of Dress:

At leasure, most Bird-People wear small, loose-fitting toga-style white garments with a few gold or silver accessories (braclets, belts, headbands, etc.)

The king is usually identified by a metal bowl-shaped helmet with a plume of feathers sticking out of the top.

Soldiers have been shown in wearing standard uniforms withen Helenic Greek looking helmets (seen at left)...

and other warriors have been shown in individual Roman gladiator-like armor (at right).

Each Bloodraven cultist wears individualized black and grey armor, plated metal and leather, with various types of horns on the front of their Norse-esque helmets (see bellow). The Priestlord dressed slightly less assuming and had no horns.

Technology:

Based initially on Inhuman technology (itself based on Kree technology, itself based on Skrull technology, etc.), the advanced technology is far beyond that of contemporary humans, but how it matches against the technology of other hidden cultures has not been determined.

Their genetic engineering skills are apparently highly advanced, as they have stabilized the highly chaotic and unpredictable Inhuman heriditary powers so that all members have feathered wings.

Other devices have only been glimpsed

Hand Blaster: A small, pistol-sized gun of unknown utility used by the Red Raven Android.

Anti-Gravity Gun: A two-handed weapon that can coat a subject with anti-gravitons, allowing them to remain lighter than surrounding matter. Used by the Red Raven Android to save the life of the Angel (Worthington).

Element Detector: Invented by the Royal Scientist to help Red Raven stop Ratoga. The device can detect and attract any element. For example, when set to 17.000 it can detect gold, and at 18.000 it can draw gold towards it. The exact limits of the device are unknown.

Vehicles: Largely unknown, but the Bi-Beast created two ships, presumably based on avian designs. Also, the Red Raven Android mentioned a warship called "X-16."
