Red Raven Information:

Aerie, the Sky-Isle

The home of the Bird-people has been been called at various times: Sky-Isle, Sky-City and Aerie.

Aerie was originally attached to the Inhuman city of Attilan by a massive pylon. It was balanced by "anti-gravitic engines" of Inhuman design. After a civil war between winged and non-winged Inhumans, Aerie was cut free and left to drift in the wind.

Over the next several months, the winged Inhumans worked to adjust and control the anti-gravitic engines. They used the same technology to pull away large junks of earth that they had carved out of the landscape. This created the first complete Aerie.

At some point in the last 25 to 30 years, a new struggle divided the Bird-People. Most of the race was left in suspended animation and held in a smaller portion of the Sky-Isle which was purposefully sunk beneath the Atlantic Ocean by the Red Raven android (as shown in X-Men Vol. 1 #44). This section collapsed on itself (in Sub-Mariner Vol. 1 #26) before being completely destroyed years later (in Marvel Super-Heroes Vol. 2 #8).

The bulk of Aerie was left unoccupied, save for the loan Bi-Beast who watched over it until it was destroyed during an attempted take-over by Advanced Idea Mechanics (this was seen in The Incredible Hulk Vol. 1 #169).

Shortly thereafter, the Bi-Beast built a smaller, but fully functional city with the help of mindless human slaves and the Man-Beast. This city was last scene on a Florida Beach and was presumably given to Tony Stark for study.

This city had available living space and presumably all of the other amenities of Aerie, but was intended primarily for war, and was equiped with powerful destructive blasters and a warship.

Floating 8-miles above sea level, the current Aerie (seen in Nova Vol. 3 #5 and possibly in Marvel Super-Heroes Vol. 2 #8), is much smaller than its predecessor. It is just a city, with no farm, jungle or mountain area.

Aerie has had at least three recent and drastic transformations since it has been rebuilt and refurbished as a floating urban metropolis.

The island was tilted sideways and lodged into a dimensional gateway to prevent the cosmic demon known only as The Wayfinder from entering this plane of existence. Until the door can be permanently closed, the city will remain this way.

During the occupation of the Order (Sub-Mariner, Hulk, Dr. Strange and Silver Surfer), the citizens of Aerie were returned to suspended animation and the city was mystically reformed to meet their needs. The Order's Citadel was reverted to its previous form thanks to intervention by the remaining Defenders.
