| April 22, 2003 I have a confession to make...this is going to be another thinly veiled random thoughts column. But I am going to show off and pretend like its something much better than that. Haiku Movie Reviews: Anger Management Sandler, Jack team up To make lifeless comedy. Giuliani blows! The Quiet American A Love Triangle Set during a time of war New Casablanca? Bulletproof Monk Stifler as a monk? Movie is so far past bad That it's good again. Reader Mail Q: What column has gotten the most reader response? A: Both the Graduation column and the Tubing Trip column were met with a great response (probably because of all of the name-dropping). Surprisingly though, my somewhat therapeutic recent Breakup column |

| has gotten both a wide and varied response. To those of you whom it made reflect, I enjoyed exchanging thoughts with you. To those of you who were worried about me, I appreciate your concern, but I think I'll be ok (here is where I put a little :) if I didn't hate those symbols with a passion). To those of you I hurt or angered, you have my deepest apologies. And to myself, I must admit that the therapy hasn't worked so well. I have talked to her almost daily since the column. Q: What are you doing the weekend of June 7th-8th? A: Well, I thought the answer would certainly be going on the second annual Tubing Trip. Then this weekend, I discovered that there is an absolutely ridiculous music festival going on in New York that same weekend. Beck, Blackalicious, Ben Lee, Interpol, Radiohead, N.E.R.D., The Roots, Beastie Boys, Blur, Bright Eyes, Royskopp, Sigur Ros... Wow! I am probably still going camping (cheap vs. ridiculously expensive is hard to beat) but this decision requires some serious thought. 2 Commercials That Have Caught My Eye The Budweiser Ode to the Wingman - We all like to see the long underappreciated position of Wingman gets it due, and falling on a grenade is an honorable way to go, but this commercial misses the boat. Do you see the "grenade" that the wingman is allegedly so depressed to be stuck with? She is absolutely supermodel hot. He complains about her talking about herself too much, but when a guy meets a girl at a club, is that really what he thinks about? Umm, whatever. The Mastercard "Homeward Bound" One - Rhett Miller singing the Simon and Garfunkel classic for a major credit card ad? I'd scream sellout from the rooftops if I didn't like Miller so much. The erstwhile Old 97's frontman has an awesome, creaky voice. A Quote to consider (from Sarah) I believe that man must live without the consolations called religious, which his own intelligence must by now have told him belong to the childhood of the race. Philosophy can give us nothing permanent to believe either: it is too rich in answers, each cancelling out the rest. The quest for meaning is fore-doomed. Human "life" means nothing. But that is not to say it is not worth living. What does a Debussy Arabesque "mean", or a rainbow, or a rose. A man delights in all of these, knowing himself to be no more---a wisp of music and a a haze of dreams dissolve against the sun. Man has only his two feet t o stand on, his own human trinity to see him through: Reason, Courage, and Grace. And the first plus the second equals third. -Peter deVries Take a leap of faith for a second and assume that Mr. deVries is correct. This quote can be either uplifting or incredibly depressing. It is naturally terrifying to think that this is it, there is no meaning, no heaven, nothing more. I may be alone, but I find it to be incredibly awe-inspiring...why not live life to the fullest now and be the best person you can be without any expectation of a reward or acknowledgement at the end of the journey? Why not appreciate all forms of beauty just for what they are? Right now, I'm neither reasonable, nor very brave, and as a result, you can deduct that I'm lacking in grace. Still, I think it is a goal worth striving. What Dirty Jenga has done for Susan's life in the last 10 days 1) She has been kissed by nearly as many people in a week as I have in my entire life a) One of which was my brother b) Another of whom is in high school c) Nearly half were girls. 2) Her toes have been sucked. 3) Her ears have been nibbled. 4) Her genitals have been fondled a) by my brother b) and a high school boy Dirty Jenga deserves its own column someday in the near future...it has certainly become the number one drinking game among my friend set. Reader Poll What should I do this coming Saturday? a. Go see the Faint concert at Numbers b. Go to the wedding reception mentioned in the April 15 column c. Go to a "Friends of Fondren" formal with Jill on Rice's dime d. None of the Above Please send me your responses... 3 Items under the heading, TMI 1) Eric pulled me into the bathroom at Liz's over the weekend because he broke the toilet. Why he assumed I'd be the person to fix it is beyond me, but I did, and he seemed duly impressed. 2) What was with the massive amount of toe-sucking that was going on at that party. I'm not saying I wasn't somewhat involved, but seriously, what were we thinking? People I barely knew were trying to shove their toes down my mouth! 3) I'm attracted to my step-mom's niece...is it incest when they aren't of blood relation? If nothing else, it would add a little spice to the annual family gatherings. NBA OVERSIGHT Nick, you're right. I totally overlooked Eric Musselman for Coach of the Year. I'll stick with Poppovich as my winner, but he should definitely be listed as a runner-up. Oh, and One More Thing Happy belated birthday Jennifer! |
