My name is Geoffrey Cain and I am your instructor for this course. I am a writer and educator. I have a lot of experience in editing as well. If you would like to know more about my background visit my INSTRUCTOR HOMEPAGE.

Please e-mail me early in the course with any technical concerns you have or if you have any tech related difficulties (e-mail troubles, for instance). I will help you directly or refer you to the proper tutorials.

Your online creative writing class is going to be very different from any class that you have taken offline. The main goal for this course is to create online groups for you to get feedback on your work and to provide feedback on the work of others. This course will be more like a workshop than a traditional classroom. The end result of this class will be a portfolio of your work in which you and members of your group will choose a piece to include in our online literary journal.

Our Schedule
Our course goes from Monday to Monday, that is assignments will begin on Monday and are due following Monday. In the event of a holiday, the assignment is due the day before. (Should you fall behind or need an extension please drop me a brief note explaining the circumstances.)

Let's get started!

The best thing to do is to explore your course starting with the links on the left-hand side of your screen.

You may be familiar with creative writing, but you may not be familiar with an online course. I encourage you to start by diving in head-first! Be sure to read the syllabus carefully. You are going to find some very important differences between your online and offline courses:

  1. You will need to participate by posting and responding to posts in order to help create the classroom community that you might take for granted in a regular classroom.
  2. You will have to make sure that I understand what you are not getting by posting questions and detailed responses.
  3. You will have to learn how to effectively manage your time for your classes and homework.
  4. Also, you will be given an opportunity to think and respond during discussions in ways that you may not have had in your regular classes. This is a unique opportunity to be fully engaged in the learning process.

Both learning environments require discipline and good study skills. Think about what techniques you use to succeed in your regular classes and how you can use them online. If you are not aware of your particular techniques, here are some URLs that will help you focus on study skills:

  1. Study Skills Self-help Information from Virginia Tech.
  2. Study Skills from the Augustine Club at Columbia University.
  3. Study skills from the University of St. Thomas.

In your first posting I would like you to tell a little bit about yourself and discuss what techniques you have found useful in your success as a learner or a technique that you found from the URLs above that you are going to try that you haven't before.
I look forward to your participation. Posted by Geoffrey Cain
