Creative Writing: Week 9 Assignments

A picture of Rudyard Kipling.

Narrative:

Narrative is the telling of the story. Stories are often written in an omniscient perspective -- a perspective that sees all. Some stories are written in the voice of the author, but authors will often use the narrator's voice to create another character in the story. You have to determine the narrator's reliability. The possibility of adding narrative voice as another dimension to the story is exciting. It can be like studying for an acting part. While writing in first person, the narrative voice is often considered to be the "writer's" voice. This is a problem in itself which we should discuss. The narrator's voice as a character gives the writer an opportunity to explore many voices and different ways of speaking (word choice, dialect, gender, age, etc.).
The most deceptive of all is the writer's own voice, a voice that is as recognizable as a thumbprint to those that know what to look for. Never take for granted that a seemingly naturalistically written story is therefore the voice of the author.

Small Groups

You will want to meet with your small group and discuss which stories and journal entries you would like to include in your portfolio.

Reading

This week we are reading Rudyard Kiipling's "The Man Who Would Be King." We will read this story and analyze it together in the discussion board. We will use the class critiquing document and the questions below to discuss the story.

Describe the narrators of this story. Is one more of a reliable narrator than the other? Do we trust one narrator's perspective over another's?
