Creative Writing: Week 5 Assignments

A picture of Virginia Woolf.

Point of View

Point of view, or POV as it is called in the movie industry, is the perspective from which a story is told. How deeply or intimately you wish your readers to be involved in the story will depend on how you decide to use POV. The different kinds of POV include:

  1. First person - This is the perspective of the "I" narrator: "I went for a walk downtown, but I didn't know why."
  2. Second person - This point of view uses "you" as the perspective: "You went for a walk downtown but you didn't know why."
  3. Third person - This POV uses "he," "she," or "they" as the perspective: "He went for a walk downtown, but he didn't know why."

POV can shape how your readers place themselves in the story or how they relate to the characters. We will discuss the possiblities and use of perspective in this week's discussion.

Small Groups

Be prepared to discuss the small group process in your online chat. You will then send your group and me any writing (your fiction) or any responses that are due. If you receive any work from your group, you will read their work, answer questions about the work and send the response to the author and to me.
