Bill was the first member of his family to attend college and graduated from Shippensburg State Teachers College in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Later he added a Master of Arts degree from St. Lawrence University in 1946. Coming from a family lacking money, Bill was able to attend college only because campus jobs were found for him because of his ability to play sports - mainly baseball and basketball, but some football also. At Shippensburg, he met his future wife. Surprisingly, Bill, a college athlete, was deferred from military service during World War II because of a heart problem. After initial teaching jobs in Elizabethtown and Seneca Falls, NY, Bill was able to find a teaching job in Hagerstown, MD where he was able to live first in Waynesboro, PA in 1945 until he built a home in Hagerstown during the summer of 1956. Primarily, Bill taught high school general science, chemistry, and physics at Hagerstown and North Hagerstown High School, but in the early years also did some coaching. Later in his career, he also functioned as assistant principal with limited teaching duties and for about five years was principal at a smaller county high school in Clear Spring, MD. Bill died of a heart attack and was buried at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro, PA.
