| The Blades kicked off the 2006/07 Premiership season at Bramall Lane with a 1-1 draw with Liverpool. Rob Hulse gave United the lead early in the second half with a towering header after David Unsworth's free-kick, but the Reds pulled level from the penalty spot after referee Rob Styles awarded a debatable penalty in their favour, which Robbie Fowler converted. The day began in style as news broke that last season's Championship player of the year Phil Jagielka had signed a new deal, keeping him at Bramall Lane until 2010. Amonsgst the 31,726 Bramall Lane crowd were Sean Bean and England boss Steve McClaren, possibly checking up on Tonge, Jags and Webber - probably checking up on Carragher, Gerrard and Crouch! The Blades pushed Liverpool early on and never looked overawed, helped by a sea of red and white shouting their loudest in the new-look Bramall Lane. The first chance fell to Benitez's men and Welsh striker Craig Bellamy, who unleashed a low, hard drive across the face of goal but Paddy Kenny wasn't troubled. On 22 minutes, Paddy Kenny almost made a hash of things as he opted to rush out of his goal to challenge the on-rushing John Arne Riise. The Norweigan full-back got his cross in, which cleared by the diving Chris Morgan, with Kenny looking releaved. The immediate concern was for Riise though, who had gone down in a heap next to the advertising hoardings after the collision. He was later replaced by Mark Gonzalez. Steven Gerrard's free-kick was then intercepted by Chris Armstrong, but his attempted clearance flew goalwards, with Paddy Kenny diving to catch the ball. England international Jamie Carragher became Liverpool's second substitution on 35 minutes after picking up a knock, replaced by Daniel Agger. The first booking of the Premiership season was no surprise moments later as Chris Morgan was shown a yellow for handball. From the resulting free-kick, Fabio Aurelio launced a swerving effort towards goal, which was brilliantly tipped over by Paddy Kenny. United broke the deadlock on 41 minutes after some fancy footwork by Danny Webber, who went past Sammi Hyypia before playing a neat ball through to Rob Hulse. The former Leeds striker coolly slotted past Pepe Reina, but the celebrations were short-lived as the linesman had raised his flag. Only 52 seconds into the second half the Blades were in heaven as they took the lead. David Unsworth's inch-perfect free-kick on the left wing found Rob Hulse just indside the 6-yard box, who towered above his marker to head home in his first Blades goal in front of the Kop, sending the fans wild (see video below)! Hulse was obviously still on a high from his goal 3 minutes later as his concentration was tested by Sammi Hyypia from a Liverpool corner. The Finland international leaped and left Hulse standing, but saw his header rebound of the post and away from goal. Liverpool knew they had to step up a gear and step up a gear they did. The creative Michael Tonge, who was continuously impressive in the first half, seemed to disapear in the second half, probably due to the fact that Steven 'Mr Liverpool' Gerrard stepped it up, which inevitably meant the Reds stepped it up on the whole. Keith Gillespie replaced Paul Ifill for United, whilst Sissoko was booked for a tackle on Tonge. Welshman Craig Bellamy should have pulled the game level when he met Fabio Aurelio's cross but failed to direct his header away from Paddy Kenny, who gathered. Controversy struck in the 70th minute when referee Rob Styles awarded Liverpool a penalty after Steven Gerrard went to ground. The England vice-captain played a neat one-two with Robbie Fowler before sending in a low, tame effort before going to ground. It looked as though an advantage was played and Gerrard failed to 'take advantage' of the situation, but once the ball went wide, the spot-kick was given. Reds boss Rafa Benitez stated in his after-match interview that it should have also been a red card as Gerrard was the last man. Either way, Styles obviously doesn't know some of the rules. Robbie Fowler calmly placed the ball in the back of the net, after taking the ball off Bellamy. Akinbiy replaced Hulse in attack, and Jagielka moved into defence as Leigertwood replaced an injured Bromby. But neither side appeared to be pressing for the winner and the game ended with both sides picking up a point. The Blades now face a trip to European Cup contenders Spurs on Tuesday night. United: Kenny, Geary, Bromby (Leigertwood 75), Morgan, Unsworth, Ifill (Gillespie 59), Jagielka, Tonge, Armstrong, Hulse (Akinbiyi 86), Webber. Subs Not Used: Sommeil, Nade. Liverpool: Reina, Kromkamp, Hyypia, Carragher (Agger 34), Riise (Gonzalez 26), Gerrard, Sissoko, Zenden, Aurelio, Fowler (Pennant 83), Bellamy. Subs Not Used: Dudek, Crouch. Booked: Morgan, Sissoko, Kromkamp. Att: 31,726. Ref: R Styles (Hampshire). Report by: Danny Oxley | GOM Man of the Match: Rob Hulse |
