| Sheffield Uniteds final Championship game ended with a victory thanks to a header from Captain Chris Morgan in the 81st minute. The game, broadcast live of Sky, was not a sensational send-off for the Blades, however there was a very special atmosphere around beautiful down town Bramall Lane as United ended 12 years of hurt. The famous red and white wizards adopted a new version of red and white stripes as they showed off their new Premiership kit. The design with its basic, yet classy appearance will certainly look better next season with Premiership badges! The game never promised to be a classic. Neither side had anything to play for except pride, and for the visitors, a good vain of form for the Play-Offs. For United this was a celebration, and an overdue good-bye to the division. The game began with few sparks, but the United and Palace faithful entertained themselves with several impressive Mexican waves which rippled around beautiful down town Bramall Lane. United stroked the ball around the park with ease and finesse, whilst a cross from McAnuff on the left flank failed to find a visiting player in the United box. Michael Tonge later curled a 20 yard shot wide, whilst Shipperely failed to convert a David Unsworth cross as the assured Kiraly came and caught the ball comfortably. Clinton Morrison then played a part in the action as he had a shot well blocked on 36th minutes, and then moments later was caught offside which didnt matter as he scuffed his shot from yards out after a decent flick-on from Freedman. The Republic of Ireland striker found himself offside yet again, and not for the last time in the match, but this time he at least found the net. With 43 minutes gone Morrison pounced onto a through ball from Watson and slid the ball passed his fellow countryman Paddy Kenny. The flag was raised before the Palace fans could celebrate. There was only one minute of injury time to bring what was a dull first half where the fans were distracted with several Conga lines and an array of Mexican waves. The Blades had clearly been told by Warnock to liven up proceedings as they opened the half a lot brighter. Playmaker Short made a driven run from defence to set Jagielka up for a shot which could only find the middle of the Kop. Unsworth then displayed a moment of flair as he outfoxed a Palace defender on the by-line, cutting inside the box to feed Webber, however his chance found Kiraly. The Palace Keeper was then hailed by the Kop, Tracksuit from Matalan! Palaces first effort of the second half came after 55 minutes as Morrison header over a cross from Marco Reich. Moments earlier, Danny Webber had out-jinxed Darren Ward to set up Keith Gillespie, however the Irishman could only fluff the ball wide of the track-suit bottomed Kiraly. Palace continued to be hurt by Keith Gillespies sharp attacking runs as three times in quick succession the winger fired crosses into Kiralys area. From one of the crosses, Michael Tonge paused the ball outside the area to set him up for a curled effort which narrowly flew passed the upright. Ade Akinbiyi, then narrowly failed to convert an effort. On 76 minutes Craig Short ended a fantastic career in football. He was given a standing ovation from the packed out Bramall Lane as he was replaced by Chris Lucketti. The Blades finally broke Palaces resolve with an impressive cross from former Man United star, Keith Gillespie. Tonge and Gillespie crafted the quick corner which was whipped in and met by a well directed header from Chris Morgan. The Kop jumped up to celebrate Sheffield Uniteds final goal in the Championship. Uniteds very own living Legend entered the fray on 84 minutes for his swansong at what he considers to be his home. Deano chants echoed around the Lane for the majority of the 90 minutes, when he finally came onto the field, the Lane erupted. The final whistle finally ended 12 years of hurt, the Blades were rocking back to the Premiership!!! Report by: Joe Hibbert | Attendance: 27,120 | Man of the Match: Michael Tonge |
