�The Home of Football
Sheffield can, quite rightly, claim to be the birthplace of organised association football - as we know it. The two oldest football clubs in the world play their trade in the Steel City, one of them being Sheffield FC. Within five years of Sheffield FC forming, there were fifteen clubs operating in Sheffield. Significantly when The FA was formed in 1863 in London, it adopted Sheffield FC�s rules with a few amendments.


1854
�Sheffield United Cricket Club formed. The first sporting club in The World to term itself "United".

1855
�Bramall Lane opened.

1857
�24th October 1857 Sheffield FC founded at Highfield, Sheffield 2. Less than a mile from Bramall Lane.  "The World�s Oldest Football Club". They draw up the world�s first set of association football rules.
�Hallam FC founded. The second oldest club in the World. Play Sheffield FC on Boxing Day 1860 at Sandygate, Sheffield. The World�s first inter-club football match. Hallam still play at Sandygate making it �The World�s Oldest Football Ground.�

1862
�Bramall Lane hosts its first football match Sheffield Club -V- Hallam FC. Also the  Worlds first recorded football charity match.. Proceeds went to the Lancashire Distress Fund. A local press report describes the match as �The Battle of Bramall Lane� after a free-for-all involving every player on the pitch!!!

1863
�Yorkshire CCC founded at Bramall Lane.

1867
�Bramall Lane hosts the World�s first Cup Final. The Youdan Cup is the World�s first organised football competition with twelve Sheffield clubs taking part. There is a continuous history of football at Bramall Lane since 1867 making it �The World's Oldest Major Football Ground.�

1868
�Bramall Lane hosts the final of The Cromwell Cup. Won with the World�s first golden goal in extra time.

1871
�Bramall Lane hosts England�s (therefore The World�s) first inter-association match. Sheffield beat London 3-1.

1878
�The world�s first floodlit match held at Bramall Lane.

1883
�The first England -V- Scotland international to be contested outside of London and Glasgow played at Bramall Lane.

1889
�Sheffield United FC formed. The first professional football team in the World to call themselves �United�.

1892
�United become the first and remain the only league team to score 10 goals in an away fixture -V- Burslem Port Vale.

1893
�United become first ever team in the World to be promoted after a test match (play-off) victory -V- Accrington Stanley.

1915
�The Khaki Cup Final United become only team to win FA Cup during a World War -V- Chelsea.

1927
�First British radio commentary, Arsenal -V- Sheffield United from Highbury.

1930/31
�Jimmy Dunne scores 41 goals in one season, which set the record for most goals in a season by one player.

1933
�The Blades pick up their worst ever league defeat, a 10-3 loss away at Middlesbrough.

1948
�Joe Shaw signs for United and eventually became the Blades' record appearance holder, playing 629 times in the famous red and white stripes.

1992
�Bramall Lane sees the first ever Premiership goal. Brian Deane, for the Blades -V- Manchester United.

1996
�Sheffield United pay West Ham United �1,200,000 for Don Hutchinson, the most they have ever spent on a player.

1999
�Lee Morris is sold to Derby County to set the record transfer fee received to �3,000,000.

2006
�Sheffield United pay Burnley �1,750,000 for Ade Akinbiyi. It breaks the record amount ever paid for a player, which was last broken in 1996.
