COUSIN CARL
EPISODE 8: COUSIN CARL - "Brent tries to prove that his prodigal cousin is a dork while Dog River puts on its annual talent show."

This episode features Mike Wilmont as Cousin Carl and Dale Wilson as The Man From Glad.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This could have been one of the funnier episodes of the season had so much time not been wasted on the talent show. The talent show had to be lame by design for the episode to turn out the way it did, but the unfortunate effect of that was how long it had to go on to make things happen the way they did. One big plus of the episode is how Mike Wilmont portrays the obnoxious cousin, and another is the fact that Brent is such a jerk to him that you almost feel sorry for a guy who is clearly a world-class jackass.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: The one I won't soon forget is when Carl gives Hank a pocket watch and Brent sees the whole thing through his selective rewind.

MEMORABLE LINE: Brent uncorks an all-time classic with "I've always had a very sensitive dink meter." A close second would be Oscar's oft-repeated "I'm a senior!"

FUNNIEST SCENE IN THIS EPISODE: In the opening scene, old lady Jensen tells Brent about the excellent customer service that Oscar used to give her - and then Oscar walks in, being his typical self.

BLOOPERS:

1.) This one can, of course, be explained by the powers of the angels in Brent's Happy Place, but when the grill opens there are nine hot dogs on it, and a split second there are eight, with one in the right hand of the Angel of Readily Available Food and Refreshment. Because there probably isn't a long wait to be served in Brent's Happy Place, this probably doesn't qualify as a blooper, but it is worth noting that any angel that can come up with food and drink of choice on demand is now in my Happy Place as well. By the way, if you put the scene on slow motion and pay close attention to the layout of the hot dogs, you can see that the Angel of Readily Available Food and Refreshment actually took the hot dog closest to where the Angel of Good Times and No Hassles is standing

2.) In the first scene after the opening credits, Wanda brings in a sign promoting the 17th annual Dog River talent show, the date on the poster is Saturday, July 12th (it almost looks like July 17th, which would actually be a real date in 2004, but the 12th is mentioned later in the episode when Hank loses track of time with his new watch). July 12th was the date on two issues of the Dog River Howler in the season's first episode and on still another one at the very end of "Grad 68."

TRIVIA: Dale Wilson, who plays The Man from Glad, played a doctor in "Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story," in which Gabrielle appeared.
