CHAPTER 17
The Executive stared at the man across the desk, the man with blue eyes.
This was not a good situation in any way; you could tell just by looking at the man that he had had time enough for the drug to wear off. It could be seen in his every gesture, even the way he fidgeted in his seat, obviously nervous about being in the Executive's presence.
This man was changed. He no longer looked like one of the The Executive's citizens; he didn't even speak like one. He told his story with passion, passion The Executive had forgotten.
"...so you must see that these new experiences can greatly enhance our society. Imagine the lives we could lead together, united through the physical as well as the emotional!"
"This is truly very interesting." The Executive's voice rang out pure and strong. "You should know, though, that a long time ago our ancestors decided that sexual encounters were not necessary for procreation, and were actually detrimental to our society..."
Here Sim interrupted: "But you don't understand! This couldn't possibly be detrimental! It is wonderful in more ways than I could ever describe to you. It has changed me, I can't explain how, but I even think differently..." Sim's hands flew about his face as he tried in vain to explain his feelings. The Executive stared at this display with shock, obviously disapproving of the outburst.
"Nevertheless," The Executive went on coolly, "it is not an issue I am willing to discuss..."
Again Sim interrupted, and The Executive's face darkened. "If I could only make you understand! Perhaps if you came with me to Analise's village you could see for yourself... they are a beautiful people with philosophies we haven't even dreamt of..." Sim's voice trailed off as he thought about his lover, and his hands finally came to rest.
The Executive stared impassively into Sim's face, saying nothing, realizing Sim would not be convinced, and said, "You are very passionate about this," Sim did not know the meaning of the word, and did not recognize the note of disdain in The Executive's voice. "It is obvious we must take action. I will accompany you to this village and we will see what must be done."
Sim's excitement at the prospect of returning to Analise and uniting these peoples caused him to leap from his chair, thanking The Executive profusely, and exit the office in a hurry. His excitement also caused him to miss the cold, calculating smile on The Executive's face - a rare expression of determination.
