Home coming

Preparing the Cage

Ø      The cage should be prepared before you even buy your hamsters.

Ø      Line the cage with the bedding

Ø      Fill the water bottle with water and fixed it to where it is easily reached by your hamsters.

Ø      Place the accessories in suitable places in the cage

Ø      Fill the food bowl with food

Ø      Fix the wheel at a suitable position

Ø      Your cage is almost ready by now...

On the Way home

Try to bring a little tank along with you when buying your hamsters as the container most pet shops provide are simple a cardboard box which can be easily gnawed through by your hamsters. And before you even know it, you have lost them somewhere back on the way. Sob~ sob~

Remember to put a slice or cucumber in the tank/carrier so that they do not feel hungry or dehydrate on the way back home.

Go straight home once you have bought your hammies, do not show then off to your friends or continue with other activities. This is to minimize the amount of stress on them.

Arriving Home

Once you arrived home, place your hamster in the prepared cage and leave it to explore and get used to its new surrounding. Much as you will be tempted to take it out to play but try to resist the temptation to reduce the amount of stress on your hamsters. The few days may be very critical to both you and your hamster.

Allowing it to explore and get comfortable with its new surroundings on its own for a day can have many benefits. The hamster will not be confused and frighten of you and will be easier to tame in the future. Frightening the hamster in the initial stage might let to wet tail which can be rather troublesome.

You may see your hamster moving around frantically, moving its nesting area over a few places and may sleep a lot too. This will normally continue for a few days and once it has stopped all these abnormal behavior you can start handling it.
